CEDARVILLE, Ohio – After not playing a five set match entering this week, Ohio Dominican's volleyball team played its third such match in five days, but came up just short against host Cedarville on Saturday afternoon.
The Panthers dropped the first two sets 15-25 and 14-25, but bounced back with 28-26 and 25-23 wins in the third and fourth sets before falling 10-15 in the decisive frame.
Junior Kelly Nadler (Leipsic, Ohio) led the Panthers with 17 kills while hitting .212. Freshman Alyssa Hoyng (Celina, Ohio) added 14 kills and hit .345 while junior Rebecca Skidmore (Westerville, Ohio) added 10 kills.
The Panthers had jumped to a 9-2 lead in the third set, but Cedarville rallied to take a 20-19 lead. ODU answered with a 5-2 run to go on top 24-22, but the Yellow Jackets again answered and served for the match at 25-24 and 26-25. However, a trio of hitting errors by the hosts kept ODU alive in the match.
Cedarville took a 9-4 lead in the fourth set and still led 21-18 before the Panthers recovered. The Panthers drew even at 23-23 on a block by Hoyng and freshman Ashton Barr (New Castle, Ind.), and Nadler had consecutive kills to close the set and level the match.
ODU trailed 6-5 in the fifth set after a kill by freshman Alexis Young (Gahanna, Ohio), but a 4-1 run by the hosts gave Cedarville some separation, and the Panthers drew within two twice (10-8, 12-10) but could get no closer.
Barr finished with 43 assists and 11 digs, while Young led the Panthers with 20 digs. Sophomore Bailey Line (Westerville, Ohio) also had 14 digs.
Ohio Dominican (5-24, 3-12 G-MAC) returns to the road for a 3 p.m. (CT) match at Trevecca Nazarene on Friday, Nov. 10.
