ROLLA, Mo. – Ohio Dominican's volleyball team dropped both of its matches on Friday at the Middle of Everywhere Classic, hosted by Missouri S&T, as the Panthers fell 3-0 to Upper Iowa (15-25, 15-25, 21-25) and a narrow 3-0 setback to William Jewell (16-25, 23-25, 23-25).
In the opener, ODU challenged the Peacocks early in the third set, forging a 10-10 tie on a kill from freshman Alexis Young (Gahanna, Ohio) and consecutive terminations by classmate Alyssa Hoyng (Celina, Ohio). UIU scored the next five points, though, and led by as much as seven (21-14) before the Panthers rallied late.
Young tallied two more kills and Ralston added one to bring the Panthers within 21-18, and one more kill from Young kept the Panthers in striking distance at 24-21 before UIU closed the match with one final kill.
Young led the Panthers with 11 kills, while junior Ciara Ralston (Findlay, Ohio) chipped in with nine kills. Freshman Ashton Barr (New Castle, Ind.) notched 20 assists and junior Anna Ficker (Cincinnati, Ohio) led ODU with 18 digs.
Against the Cardinals in the second match, the Panthers took a 12-7 lead in the second set, but WJC answered with a 7-2 run to tie the set at 14. The lead swung back-and-forth, with ODU taking a 22-21 edge on an ace, before the Cardinals answered by scoring four of the final five points.
The Panthers started strong in the third set as well, opening a 17-12 lead on a combo block from Barr and junior Patricia Barreto (Findlay, Ohio), but WJC answered with a 12-3 burst to go in front 24-20. The Panthers scored the next three points, closing to 24-23 on a pair of setting errors, but WJC scored the final point to take the set and the match.
Young had seven kills, Ficker had 21 digs and Barr added 19 assists to lead ODU.
