COLUMBUS, Ohio – Freshman Lauren Kraemer (Kettering, Ohio) and junior Brianna Reder (Maineville, Ohio) combined for 27 kills as the Panthers went on to beat Malone 3-1 (20-25, 25-20, 25-17, 25-23) on the Panthers senior day Saturday afternoon in Alumni Hall.
The Panthers improved to 14-16 (8-10 GLIAC), while the Pioneers dropped to 12-18 (7-11 GLIAC).
Kraemer tallied 14 kills on 42 swings, finishing with just four errors and hitting .238. Reeder had 13 kills while junior Lauren Rindler (Rossburg, Ohio) and senior Bailey Barker (Muncie, Ind.) each totaled nine kills.
After the 25-20 setback in the first set, the Panthers came out strong to start the second set, jumping to a 10-3 lead on consecutive kills by freshman Jackie Oestreich (Brighton, Mich.) and Rindler. ODU remained in front by at least five points for most of the set until the Pioneers drew within 21-18. However Kraemer and Rindler combined three kills to help close the frame and knot the match at a set apiece.
The third set was dominated by ODU after the Panthers jumped to a 9-2 lead early in the set and only allowed Malone to reach within seven.
The fourth set was a mini marathon. ODU jumped to a 5-2 lead, the Pioneers stormed back and would tie the set at 11 and although the Panthers never fell behind from that point forward, Malone kept it interesting, reaching within one point five times. With ODU ahead 24-22, the Panthers sealed the match point with a kill from Barker.
Freshman Heidi Hess (Dayton, Ohio) registered 25 assists and sophomore Kelsey Fortney (Lorain, Ohio) had 22 helpers. Freshman Megan Hendershot (Galloway, Ohio) finished with 23 digs and Rindler added 21.
