COLUMBUS, Ohio – Ohio Dominican's volleyball team couldn't sustain its momentum from a first set victory, falling 3-1 (25-23, 26-28, 15-25, 20-25) to Cedarville in a non-conference matchup Tuesday night in Alumni Hall.
With the setback, the Panthers fell to 7-9 on the year, while the Yellow Jackets improved to 9-11.
The Panthers had a strong night offensively, hitting .211 for the match, but Cedarville countered with a .286 attack percentage, tallying at least 14 kills in each set.
Sophomore Lauren Kraemer (Kettering, Ohio) finished with 14 kills to lead ODU, while freshman Jackie Oestreich (Brighton, Mich.) added 11. Sophomore Darby Slavin (Columbus, Ohio) had a match-high 44 assists and freshman Heidi Hess (Dayton, Ohio) totaled a match-best 21 digs.
The Panthers came out firing in the first set, jumping to a 10-5 lead early. Cedarville rallied to tie it at 17-17, but kills by Taylor Foster (Ida, Mich.) and Oestreich helped push the lead up to 20-17. Cedarville drew within one on a pair of occasions, but Kraemer's termination ended the first set in favor of ODU.
The Yellow Jackets seized momentum early in the second set, taking a 5-1 lead. ODU hung around, though, behind the serving of senior Bailey Barker (Muncie, Ind.), taking a lead at 9-8. The set swung back and forth, with 13 ties and five lead changes, though ODU had a chance to end it with the serve at 24-23. However, the Panthers couldn't close it out as Cedarville scored consecutive points, then held on to take the frame at 28-26.
Cedarville then hit .467 in the third set and used an 8-3 run midway through the fourth set to pull away from ODU and close out the match.
Ohio Dominican returns to action Friday with a 7 p.m. match at Saginaw Valley.
