CHARLESTON, W.Va. – Ohio Dominican's volleyball team closed play at the Charleston Invitational with a pair of wins Saturday against Edinboro (25-23, 25-27, 25-21, 25-22) and West Liberty State (25-18, 25-20, 25-13).
The win against Edinboro was the second time ODU knocked off the Fighting Scots in a week after matching up with them at last week's tournament at Clarion.
Three players had 10 or more kills in this match, highlighted by a season-best 13 from senior Bailey Barker (Muncie, Ind.). She was two kills shy of a career-best.
Sophomores Kelsey Fortney (Lorain, Ohio) and Darby Slavin (Columbus, Ohio) continued to pace the offense with 23 and 19 assists, respectively, and freshman Megan Hendershot (Galloway, Ohio) notched a season-best 22 digs.
ODU trailed 16-15 in the first set but scored the next three points to go in front, and would not trail again. Edinboro would cut it to 22-21 and 24-23, but a service error closed the win for ODU.
After failing to protect a 24-22 lead in the second set, the Panthers bounced back in set number three. Up 20-19, ODU scored the next four points, each on the benefit of Edinboro errors, then closed the set on Barker's kill.
Edinboro took a 13-11 lead in the fourth set, but it was all Panthers from there. A kill by Barker capped a 9-2 run that gave ODU a 20-15 lead, and the Panthers held off one last Edinboro surge to close the win.
In the nightcap against West Liberty, ODU held the Hilltoppers to a -.010 hitting percentage for the match (26 kills, 27 errors).
Junior Brianna Reder (Maineville, Ohio) hit .357 with seven kills, Barker had seven more tallies and Rindler chipped in with six as well.
Ohio Dominican begins conference play at Malone at 7 p.m. on Friday, Sept. 20.
