The 2012-13 season was another landmark year for Ohio Dominican athletics as the athletic programs took another step forward in the NCAA Division II ranks. OhioDominicanPanthers.com is counting down the top moments from the past year.

No. 10 – Volleyball Rallies in Five in Longest GLIAC Match of Season

Dozens of GLIAC matches went five sets last fall, but none lasted quite as long as the duel between Ohio Dominican and Lake Superior in Alumni Hall on Oct. 6.

After falling behind 2-0 in the match, ODU roared back to convincing victories in sets three and four, took a commanding fifth set lead, then fought off a Lake Superior rally to claim a 22-20 win the decisive set.

Lake Superior won a narrow 25-23 decision in the opening set, and the Panthers would fall 25-21 in the second set despite hitting .323. Service errors and reception errors plagued ODU in the opening two frames, allowing LSSU to push the Panthers to the brink on their home court.

But ODU responded in the third set, hitting .419 in the frame to cruise to a 25-17 victory. The momentum carried into the fourth set, as an 8-2 burst midway through the frame helped the Panthers to a 25-18 victory.

The Panthers continued their strong surge to start the fifth and final set, grabbing a 9-2 advantage and seemingly in control. However, Lake Superior crept back into the match and eventually tied it at 14-14.

ODU had the serve three times with a chance to win it, but the Lakers fought off each match point and would take a 17-16 lead of its own. Lauren Kraemer (Kettering, Ohio) kept ODU alive with a powerful spike, and ODU took a 19-18 on an LSSU error. The Lakers answered with a kill of their own, and after a Panther error, had another match point at 20-19.

Kristy Birkemeier (Columbus Grove, Ohio) delivered a kill to knot it at 20, though, and after a Laker hitting error, sophomore Bailey Barker (Muncie, Ind.) drilled a serve that could not be handled to close the match for ODU.
