Women’s Soccer Earns 2-0 Win Over Kentucky Wesleyan, Advances To Great Midwest Semifinals

COLUMBUS, Ohio — For the fourth-consecutive season, Ohio Dominican's women's soccer team earned a trip to the semifinal round of a conference tournament after defeating Kentucky Wesleyan by a final mark of 2-0 on a brisk day at Panther Stadium Saturday in a Great Midwest Athletic Conference Tournament quarterfinal.

ODU (14-4-1, 11-2-1 G-MAC) held a decisive 35-12 advantage in shots over KWC, including a 14-5 edge in shots on goal. Ohio Dominican also accrued nine corner kicks compared to three for Kentucky Wesleyan.

Senior Lauren Bates (Hilliard, Ohio) notched her 14th goal of the season and found the back of the net for the sixth-straight match. Bates has now scored or assisted on Panther goals in seven-straight contests.

Also scoring for Ohio Dominican was sophomore Becca Gordon (Johnstown, Ohio), who scored her fourth goal in the last two matches and eighth goal of the season. Gordon led Ohio Dominican in shots (12) and shared the team lead in shots on goal (four) with Bates.

Junior keeper Marissa Wierzbicki (Powell, Ohio) earned her 14th win of the year, recording four saves in the win.

Ohio Dominican scored its first goal of the match in the 19th minute. Freshman Lindsay Buten (Cincinnati, Ohio) found junior Susan D'Isidoro (Twinsburg, Ohio) on the left wing, who passed to Bates in the middle of the box. Bates controlled the ball cleanly and put her 14th strike of the season to the back of the net, giving ODU a 1-0 first half lead.

Kentucky Wesleyan kept ODU out of the goal for the next 68 minutes of the match, thanks in part to 12 saves by keeper Taylor Rentchler, but Gordon would score in the 87th minute to put the game out of reach. Sophomore Madeline Reimbold (Fort Wayne, Indiana) and sophomore Lindsey Sullivan (Marysville, Ohio) created the opportunity for Gordon with well-timed passes on the right wing, finding Gordon in the middle of the box. The sophomore put the ball to the back of the net for her eighth goal of the season, giving Ohio Dominican a 2-0 lead late in the contest. The Panthers earned their seventh shutout of the year, advancing to the conference semifinals by way of a 2-0 win.

Ohio Dominican will face Walsh in a Great Midwest Tournament semifinal match on Thursday, with time and location TBA.
