Women's Golf Opens Spring Slate with Solid Effort in Florida
HARMONY, Fla. – Ohio Dominican's women's golf team recently wrapped up competition at its spring opener, the two-day ODU Harmony Spring Break Invite at Harmony Golf Preserve in Harmony, Florida.
On Thursday, the Panthers competed head-to-head with GLIAC foe Northwood (Mich.) in an 18-hole individual stroke play event with no team scores. Sophomore Ashley Swartz (Lima, OH) equaled her season low round and tied for medalist honors with an 84 (43-41), becoming just the fifth golfer to win a title in program history and second this year. Freshman Kelsey Auditore (Dayton, OH) shot an 82 to clinch the weather-shortened Lake Erie/Qdoba Mexican Grille Invitational back in early October.
Freshman Danielle Misencik (Concord, OH) finished in a tie for sixth with an 88 (45-43), senior Sarah Vonderembse (Lima, OH) posted an 89 (40-49) for eight position, and junior Amanda Costanzo (Silver Lake, OH) and freshman Lauren Kyre (Pickerington, OH) tied for ninth with a pair of 91s.
In Friday's action, ODU and Northwood squared off in a match play tournament, consisting first of three pairings of alternate shot format, followed by six groups of singles play. The pairing of Krye and Swartz defeated the Timberwolves' Cox and Lenkowski 2 and 1 to earn the Panthers' lone point in the opening segment. In singles play, ODU took three of the six matches as Swartz and Costanzo each won 1 up and Misencik defeated her counterpart, 2 and 1.
In what shaped up to be the pairing of the day, Vonderembse and Northwood's Davidson battled back-and-forth to an all-square through 21 holes, however on the fourth additional hole, Davidson came up with the decisive shot to win 1 up and give the Timberwolves the title, 5-4.
The Panthers return to the course next Saturday, March 24 as the team travels to Owenton, Kentucky for the two-day Northern Kentucky University Spring Fling at Perry Park Golf Resort.
