Late Free Throws and Defensive Stops Pushes Women's Basketball Past Findlay

FINDLAY, Ohio – Late free throws and key defensive stops pushed the Ohio Dominican women's basketball team to a 76-71 win against Findlay on the road in Croy Gymnasium.

The fourth quarter opened with the teams being tied at 58 and 61 before a 7-0 Findlay run gave the Oilers their largest lead of the game at 68-61.

That run was halted by a three and another jumper by Angela Troyer (Sugarcreek, Ohio) to put the Panthers within two at 68-66. With the Panthers down two at 70-68, a Troyer three gave the Panthers a 71-70 lead with 2:28 remaining.

Findlay would knot the game at 71 before Troyer would split a pair of free throws, and give the lead back to the Panthers.

After a stop on defense, Schlabach would convert on one-of-two free throws then Hannah Clark (Glenmont, Ohio) would block an Oiler three point attempt which was recovered by Olivia Fox (Newark, Ohio). Fox would go on to split a pair of free throws and after another defensive stop, Clark would put the game out of reach with a pair of free throws to make the score 76-71.

The Panthers were led by freshman Kennedy Schlabach (Millersburg, Ohio) who posted 21 points, 17 in the first half, along with six assists and four rebounds. Matching Schlabach was Angela Troyer who posted 21 points of her own, 11 in the fourth quarter.

Junior Hannah Clark came off the bench to play 29 minutes scoring 11 points and grabbing five rebounds.

A back and forth first quarter saw the teams answer basket-for-basket up to an 8-7 Oiler lead. At that point, Findlay went on a 9-4 run to take a 17-11 lead with 4:09 remaining in the quarter.

ODU would answer with a 9-0 run to take a 20-17 lead and would hold onto a two point lead at 23-21 at the end of the first quarter.

The Panthers would open the second quarter on a 9-2 run to take a 32-23 advantage capped by a Clark layup.

Findlay would cut the deficit to four at 32-28 before a Schlabach three ended the short Oiler run.  ODU would grow that lead to 11 before a pair of baskets for Findlay at the half sent the teams to the locker room with ODU leading 39-34.

Schlabach paced the Panthers in the half with 17 points including five threes while the Panthers shot 55% overall.

Findlay would open the second half on a 6-0 run to take a 41-39 lead. In the quarter, the teams would be tied at 41, 43, and 53 with the teams trading baskets and answering each punch thrown.

The Panthers would take a two point lead at 58-56 into the fourth quarter on an Alexis Overly (Chillicothe, Ohio) three just before the buzzer.

ODU advances to 8-6 on the season and 5-3 in the G-MAC while Findlay drops to 10-4 overall and 6-3 in the conference.

The Panthers stay on the road as they travel to Hillsdale on Saturday, January 12 with tip set for 1 p.m.
