Women’s Basketball Earns Fifth-Straight Win, Tops Kentucky Wesleyan 86-75

OWENSBORO, Ky. — Ohio Dominican's women's basketball team outscored Kentucky Wesleyan 42-27 in the second half of a Great Midwest Athletic Conference game at the Owensboro Sportscenter on Saturday afternoon to notch its fifth-straight win by a final tally of 86-75.

The winning streak marks the second time this season that Ohio Dominican (16-6, 12-4 G-MAC) has earned five-straight victories and ODU currently boasts the longest string of wins in the Great Midwest.

ODU shot 22-of-27 (81.5 percent) from the free throw line and outrebounded Kentucky Wesleyan (12-9, 8-9 G-MAC) by a 41-31 margin. Ohio Dominican held KWC to just 11-of-36 shooting (30.6 percent) in the second half and outrebounded Kentucky Wesleyan 26-16 over the final 20 minutes of play.

Four Ohio Dominican Panthers scored in double figures on the day. Junior Emily Thomas (Pickerington, Ohio) scored a team-high 19 points and dished out five assists. Thomas went 9-of-9 from the free throw line, marking a career-high in made free throws and free throw attempts. Senior Darian Rose (Fort Loramie, Ohio) tallied 17 points and five rebounds. Junior Alexis Overly (Chillicothe, Ohio) scored 14 points on 5-of-7 shooting from the field and 3-of-4 shooting from the three-point line, while sophomore Alexa Fisher (Powell, Ohio) scored 14 points and tied a career-high with eight rebounds. Senior Sarah Futscher (Wilder, Kentucky) pulled down a game-high 11 rebounds and added seven points.

ODU trailed 48-44 at halftime and 56-47 at the 8:03 mark of the third quarter, but a 21-7 run to end the third stanza powered Ohio Dominican to a 68-63 lead through three quarters of play. Trailing 56-47, Futscher connected on a layup with an assist to Rose to cut the Ohio Dominican deficit to 56-49 at the 7:29 mark of the third quarter and begin the run. Leading 62-61 with 1:35 to go in the third, Fisher notched a three-point play to increase the advantage to 65-61.

Ketncuky Wesleyan was within three at the 8:17 mark of the fourth quarter at 70-67, but a 16-2 run over the next 6:06 of the game gave Ohio Dominican a commanding 86-70 lead with 2:06 to go. Leading 70-67 with 6:38 to play, Overly drilled a three-pointer with an assist to Thomas to spark the run and give ODU a 73-67 lead. Sophomore Brittleigh Macaulay (Big Prairie, Ohio) made a layup on the next trip down the floor with an assist from Overly, then Rose hit a three-pointer on ODU's next offensive possession to push the lead to 78-69 with 5:54 to play. ODU outscored KWC 18-12 in the final quarter, earning the win by a final mark of 86-75.

Ohio Dominican will take a five-game winning streak to Cedarville next Saturday.
