VIENNA, W. Va. – Ohio Dominican's women's basketball team opened up a 26-14 lead through the first 10 minutes and held on from there to defeat Ohio Valley 75-60 in the G-MAC opener Saturday.
The Panthers held Ohio Valley to 30.3 percent shooting and had a 53-46 rebounding edge. ODU forced 23 turnovers, cashing them into 31 points, and had a 16-4 advantage in fast break points as well.
ODU led for all but 1:24 in the contest, closing the first quarter on an 8-0 run to take that 12 point lead. Overly and Futscher combined for those eight points in the final 2:10 of the period as ODU scored 15 points off of Ohio Valley turnovers in the quarter.
The Panthers' offense went cold in the second quarter, though, as ODU managed just eight points, but still took a 34-26 lead into the locker room.
Leading 50-45 late in the third, Futscher made a layup and senior Darian Rose (Fort Loramie, Ohio) followed with a three-point play, and a jumper by senior Devin Conley (Danville, Ky.) and another Rose layup put ODU in front 59-47 heading to the fourth.
OVU made one last push, closing to 67-60 with 4:30 left, but the Panthers would hold the hosts scoreless down the stretch to claim the win.
Senior Megan Eyre (Fayetteville, Ohio) score eight points and grabbed nine rebounds while also coming away with four steals and blocking two shots. Rose finished with nine points, three assists and two steals. Conley added six points, four rebounds, four assists and four steals, and freshman Olivia Fox (Newark, Ohio) grabbed six rebounds off the bench.
Ohio Dominican returns home to host Kentucky Wesleyan at 5:30 p.m. Thursday in Alumni Hall.
