COLUMBUS, Ohio – Five players scored in double figures as Ohio Dominican's women's basketball team opened up a 48-32 halftime lead over No. 4 California (Pa.) and coasted to a 93-75 victory, scoring the program's first victory over a top-five in its Division II era.
Sophomore guard Alexa Fisher (Powell, Ohio) scored a game-high 21 points on 8-of-12 shooting as the Panthers (3-2) made 34-of-71 field goals (47.9 percent) while limiting Cal to 38.5 percent shooting.
A 7-0 run late in the first quarter, capped by a steal and fastbreak layup by junior Emily Thomas (Pickerington, Ohio), gave the Panthers a 19-14 lead that ultimately would never be relinquished. In front 30-28 midway through the second quarter, the Panthers closed the half on an 18-4 burst, going 6-of-8 from the field to close the half and take a 16 point cushion into the locker room.
ODU limited the Vulcans (5-1) to just 5-of-16 shooting (31.3 percent) in the period, outscoring them 27-14, while hitting on 10-of-17 (58.8 percent) themselves.
The Panthers kept the pressure up in the third quarter, stretching the lead to as much as 22, and never led by fewer than 14 points in the entire second half.
Fisher hit 5-of-7 from behind the line and also pulled down five rebounds. Senior Sarah Futscher (Wilder, Ky.) added 18 points and nine rebounds, making 8-of-15 from the field. Senior guard Megan Eyre (Fayetteville, Ohio) hit all seven free throws as she scored 13 points with six rebounds, three assists and three steals. Thomas chipped in with 11 points and five helpers off the bench.
Ohio Dominican begins G-MAC play at 2 p.m. Saturday at Ohio Valley.
