COLUMBUS, Ohio – A 51 point outburst in the second and third quarters lifted Ohio Dominican's women's basketball team to a 77-56 regional win over Saginaw Valley in the Panthers' home opener Tuesday night.
The Panthers shot a combined 21-of-38 (55.3 percent) in the middle quarters and outscored SVSU 51-29 in the two frames to improve to 2-2 on the season, with both wins coming by 20 or more points.
Senior Megan Eyre (Fayetteville, Ohio) went 7-of-9 from the field to score 18 points and also pulled down five boards. Senior Darian Rose (Fort Loramie, Ohio) added a season-high 18 points and freshman Olivia Fox (Newark, Ohio) scored a season-best 10 points while blocking two shots.
Seven players had at least two assists and the Panthers turned the ball over just 10 times through the first three quarters and matched a season-best with 19 assists.
ODU led 26-24 with 4:33 to play in the second quarter before closing the half with a 13-4 run. Eyre buried a triple to give the Panthers a 36-26 cushion, and a three pointer by senior Devin Conley (Danville, Ky.) helped give the Panthers a 39-28 lead at the break.
The Panthers then outscored SVSU 28-14 in the third quarter, with Fox hitting all four of her shots from the field in the frame, as ODU shot 60 percent in the frame to take a 67-42 lead into the fourth.
The Panthers had their best defensive effort of the season as well, holding the Cardinals (0-5) to just 33.3 percent shooting in the victory. ODU also had a 14-0 edge in fast break points, a 42-14 advantage in points in the paint, and went 13-of-14 (92.9 percent) from the charity stripe.
Ohio Dominican remains home to take on No. 4 California (Pa.) at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 29.
