Balanced Effort Paces Women's Basketball Past Tiffin, Clinches GLIAC Tournament Bid

TIFFIN, Ohio – Four players scored in double figures as Ohio Dominican's women's basketball team earned a 78-70 road win at Tiffin on Saturday in GLIAC play, guaranteeing the Panthers a spot in the 2017 GLIAC Tournament.

The Panthers, who are 9-2 in their last 11 games, improved to 16-7 (11-5 GLIAC), maintaining their spot in second place in the South Division and in a tie for third in the overall standings. With four regular season games left, the Panthers are five games clear of Hillsdale, who sits in fourth in the South and ninth in the overall standings

Junior Megan Eyre (Fayetteville, Ohio) scored a team-high 15 points to go along with six rebounds, while senior Lauren Bates (Hilliard, Ohio) added 14 points with nine boards. Junior Sarah Futscher (Wilder, Ky.) scored 12 points and classmate Darian Rose (Fort Loramie, Ohio) added 11 as well.

ODU led wire-to-wire, scoring on the first possession of the game and building a 17-7 lead on a triple by Rose just over six minutes into the game. The Panthers hit 10-of-20 shots in the first quarter and built a 23-12 lead heading to the second.

The Panthers bumped the lead to 28-16 on a three by Futscher and a transition layup by Eyre, but the Dragons scored the next 11 points to close within 28-27 with three minutes left in the quarter. ODU closed the quarter on an 8-0 burst, though, capped by a jumper from sophomore Alexis Overly (Chillicothe, Ohio) moments before the buzzer, to take a 36-27 lead into the half.

Tiffin drew within two on a pair of occasions in the third and trailed 49-46 with 3:29 left, but ODU answered with another strong close to the quarter. Senior Kayla Cook (Westerville, Ohio) hit a three and senior Madi Rittinger (Dayton, Ohio) scored four points late as the Panthers took a 59-49 lead into the fourth.

A 10-3 run to start the fourth gave ODU its biggest lead, 69-52, with seven minutes left, putting the game away.

Rittinger finished with eight points and eight rebounds and Cook also scored eight points off the bench. Rose tallied four steals and Bates finished with three assists and three steals.

Ohio Dominican returns home for a 5:30 p.m. contest against Findlay on Thursday in Alumni Hall.
