CALIFORNIA, Pa. – Ohio Dominican's women's basketball team trailed fifth-ranked California (Pa.) by just two early in the third quarter, but the Vulcans pulled away with a 93-69 victory in non-conference play Tuesday night.
A 15-0 run late in the third propelled Cal, who outscored ODU 34-16 in the period after the Panthers had trailed just 41-39.
The Panthers shot 44.8 percent, hitting 26-of-58 shots from the field, but committed 31 turnovers, which led to 36 Vulcans points.
Senior Lauren Bates (Hilliard, Ohio) led ODU with 14 points while handing out six assists, grabbing five rebounds, blocking two shots and coming up with three steals. Junior Darian Rose (Fort Loramie, Ohio) added 12 points, senior Madi Rittinger (Dayton, Ohio) scored 10 points, and senior Lindsey Blanford (Xenia, Ohio) had seven points with eight rebounds.
ODU turned the ball over nine times in the first quarter and fell behind 26-14 through the first 10 minutes, and the Vulcans lead grew to 34-19 at the 6:40 mark of the second quarter.
The Panthers inched closer, making it 36-28 after a layup from Bates, and Bates later found Blanford inside for a layup to cut it to 39-34 with 1:30 left, and a late bucket by freshman Jessica Boerger (Fort Loramie, Ohio) shrank the deficit to 41-37 at the break.
Bates scored 10 points in the second quarter alone and ODU made 14-of-25 (56.0 percent) from the field in the opening 20 minutes while having a 23-15 rebounding edge. However, ODU turned it over 15 times, compared to just four for Cal.
Rose banked in a jumper early in the third to make it 41-39, but Cal answered with six straight to bump the lead back out to 47-39. A three-point play by junior Sarah Futscher (Wilder, Ky.) brought the Panthers within 49-44 before the decisive Cal run.
Ohio Dominican will take on West Virginia Wesleyan at 2 p.m. Saturday in the Panthers' home opener from Alumni Hall.
