OXFORD, Ohio – Ohio Dominican's women's basketball team led Miami 57-56 with just over four minutes left before falling to the host RedHawks 64-61 in an exhibition game Saturday afternoon.
The Panthers had two looks at game-tying three-pointers in the waning seconds that misfired as Miami escaped with the win.
Senior Lauren Bates (Hilliard, Ohio) led ODU with 15 points, 10 rebounds and three steals, freshman Jessica Boerger (Fort Loramie, Ohio) added 10 points with nine rebounds and three assists, and senior Madi Rittinger (Dayton, Ohio) finished with seven points and seven boards. Junior Darian Rose (Fort Loramie, Ohio) chipped in 10 points as well.
The Panthers shot had a 46-42 rebounding edge on Miami and also forced 25 turnovers. However, ODU shot just 31.3 percent from the field.
Neither side led by more than three points in the opening quarter, with Miami taking a 14-13 lead into the second quarter. Rose hit three free throws to give ODU a 25-22 lead four minutes into the second, and a late jump shot by Boerger kept the Panthers in front 31-28 heading into halftime.
Boerger knocked down a triple with three minutes left in the third quarter to give the Panthers their biggest lead at 43-39, but Miami answered with an 8-0 run and would take a 47-44 lead into the fourth.
The RedHawks extended their lead to 53-47 with 7:49 left, but layups by Megan Eyre (Fayetteville, Ohio) and Bates and two free throws from Bates evened the score at 53 with 5:43 to play.
A layup by junior Sarah Futscher (Wilder, Ky.) put ODU in front 57-56 with 4:14 left, but Miami countered with an 8-1 run to go back in front by six, 64-58, with 2:09 left.
A three-point play by Bates cut the lead to three with 1:06 to play, and Bates came up with a steal to give ODU those two final cracks at tying the game that came up empty.
Ohio Dominican begins the regular season at 1 p.m. Friday against Alderson-Broaddus in the GLIAC/GMAC Crossover, hosted by Ashland.
