Women’s Track And Field Takes Third, Men’s Squad Finishes Fifth At Jessica Starks Open

COLUMBUS, Ohio — Ohio Dominican's track and field team saw the women's squad place third out of seven teams and the men's team took fifth place out of eight competing squads at the Jessica Starks Open at Capital University on Saturday.

ODU saw student-athletes take four first place finishes on the day. Junior Jalyn Devereaux (Carroll, Ohio) took first place in the women's 800 with a personal best time of 2:23.70, and also for the women, sophomore Imani Stepney (Columbus, Ohio) ran an 8.11 in the 60 meter dash to earn top honors in the event. For the men's squad, senior Taylor Williams (Houston, Texas) finished in first place in the men's 200 meter dash, finishing with a time of 22.69. Also taking first place was freshman Tre Smith (Cleveland, Ohio), who used a personal best time of 8.77 in the 60 meter hurdles to take top honors in the event.  

The women's squad saw strong showings in relay events, with the 4x400 team taking second place out of seven teams with a time of 4:23.31, and the distance medley relay team finishing second with a time of 14:25.36.

Freshman Shaunqueza Stevens (Dublin, Ohio) paced the women's sprinters. Stevens took fourth in the 60 meter dash with an 8.24, and also recorded a fifth place finish out of 39 competitors in the women's 200, finishing in 27.53. Also in the 200, junior Ryanna Reid (Columbus, Ohio) finished sixth with a time of 27.74, and freshman Bryanna Barber (Reynoldsburg, Ohio) took eighth in 27.89.

Senior Shakita Kabicek (Brook Park, Ohio) established a personal best in the women's 400, taking third place out of 16 competitors with a personal best finish of 1:05.85.

In women's field events, freshman Emma Barth (Dayton, Ohio) led the way, taking second out of 13 competitors in the women's weight throw with a distance of 12.71 meters, and earning a seventh place finish out of 16 in the shot put with a throw of 10.42 meters.

Finishing strong for the men's squad was junior Avery Sumpter (Lima, Ohio), who used a time of 7.05 in the men's 60 meter dash to take fourth place out of 12 competitors.

In the men's 200, freshman Anthony Woods (Macedonia, Ohio) used a time of 23.10 to earn fifth place out of 39 competitors. Senior Spencer Lester (Akron, Ohio) finished in 12th with a time of 23.81, and junior Kendall White (Cincinnati, Ohio) took 14th in a personal best time of 23.99.

Sophomore Bobby Bogantz (Sunbury, Ohio) earned a second place finish out of 21 runners in the men's 800 with a time of 1:59.90.

The men also saw strong finishes in relay events, with the 4x400 meter relay team of freshman Draven Bass (Circleville, Ohio), Lester, Woods and Williams taking fourth out of 11 teams with a time of 3:36.84.

In the field for the men, Bass took third in the long jump out of 13 with a distance of 6.86 meters. Sophomore Clayton Seymour (Ashville, Ohio) recorded a third place finish in the shot put with a final distance of 13.63 meters. Seymour also used a distance of 12.50 meters in the weight throw to take fifth. Sophomore Connor Cooley (London, Ohio) led the men's squad in the weight throw, taking third with a personal best of 13.81 meters.

ODU will compete in its next event on Friday, February 3 when it travels to Geneva, Ohio for the NCAA Division II Indoor Challenge.
