COLUMBUS, Ohio — Following competition at the Youngstown State University College Invitational on Friday, January 20, Ohio Dominican's track and field team will compete in the Jessica Starks Open at the Capital Center on the campus of Capital University this Saturday, January 28.
Competition will begin at 12:30 p.m. on Saturday with field events. Track events will begin at 1:25 p.m. with the women's 5k and the meet will conclude with the men's 4x400 meter relay, which is set for 6:30 p.m.
ODU track and field is coming off a strong performance at the YSU College Invitational on Friday, January 20. The men's squad saw nine competitors record top 20 finishes, and the women's team saw 12 personal bests set at YSU.
Freshman Anthony Woods (Macedonia, Ohio) finished third in the men's 60 meter finals with a time of 6.93. Woods ran a 6.95 in the men's 60 meter dash preliminary round, the second-fastest time out of 55 total competitors in the event.
Junior Justin Carroll (Berea, Ohio) captured eighth place out of 49 runners in the men's 800 meter run with a time of 1:57.91. Carroll's time was the fastest on the season for the Panthers in the men's 800 and was just short of his school record time of 1:55.32 in the event.
In men's field events, sophomore Connor Cooley (London, Ohio) recorded the top weight throw distance of the year for the Panthers with a throw of 12.49 meters. Sophomore Clayton Seymour (Ashville, Ohio)finished with a strong showing in the shot put for the Panthers, taking 14th place out of 31 throwers with a distance of 13.12 meters.
For the women's squad, sophomore Imani Stepney (Columbus, Ohio) and freshman Shaunqueza Stevens (Dublin, Ohio) each finished with personal best times and placed in the top half of the field in the women's 60 meter dash preliminaries and in the women's 200 meter run.
Senior Shakita Kabicek (Brook Park, Ohio) finished in 2:32.78 in the women's 800, the second-fastest time on the season for an ODU women's runner in the 800, and the women's team was led in the field by freshmanEmma Barth (Dayton, Ohio), who threw for a distance of 9.57 meters in the shot put and took 23rd in the weight throw out of 41 competitors with a distance of 12.62 meters.
So far this season, ODU track and field has seen 57 personal bests recorded across 21 different events. Two indoor school records have been broken thus far, with freshman Bryanna Barber (Reynoldsburg, Ohio)setting the women's indoor school record in the women's 300 meter run with a time of 46.55 at the Tiffin Alumni Open on December 3, and Carroll claimed his seventh men's indoor record after recording a 37.47 in the men's 300 at Tiffin.
Following competition at Capital this weekend, the track and field team will participate in the NCAA Division II Indoor Challenge on Friday, February 3 and will compete in the Ohio Northern Invitational on Saturday, February 4.
