YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio — Ohio Dominican men's and women's track and field competed in the first meet of 2017 for the squad and third meet of the indoor season on Friday at the 2017 Youngstown State University College Invitational at the Watson and Tressel Training Site.
Leading ODU was freshman Anthony Woods (Macedonia, Ohio), who finished third in the men's 60 meter finals with a time of 6.93. Woods ran a 6.95 in the men's 60 meter dash preliminary round, the second-fastest time out of 55 total competitors in the event. Both of Woods' times are the fastest on the season in the men's 60m for ODU.
Also finishing strong for the men's squad was junior Justin Carroll (Berea, Ohio), who captured eighth place out of 49 runners in the men's 800 meter run with a time of 1:57.91. Carroll's time was the fastest on the season for the Panthers in the men's 800 and was just short of his school record time of 1:55.32 in the event.
Sophomore Wes Pipher (Attica, Ohio) ran the second-fastest time of the season in the men's 3,000 for the Panthers, finishing in 9:11.60 to capture a 13th place finish out of 38 competitors.
Leading ODU in the men's 200 meter dash were senior Spencer Lester (Akron, Ohio) and junior Avery Sumpter (Lima, Ohio), who placed 30th and 31st out of 62 competitors. Lester finished in 23.43 and Sumpter crossed the finish line in 23.49.
In the men's 400, freshman Draven Bass (Circleville, Ohio) led the Panthers with a time of 52.57, the top time of the season for the men's squad to earn a 24th place finish out of 55 runners. Bass also recorded a strong finish in the long jump, taking 17th out of 34 with a jump of 6.03 meters.
Freshman Tre Smith ran an 8.96 in the men's 60 meter hurdles preliminary round, finishing with the 18th-fastest qualifying time out of 34 competitors and the fastest time on the season for the Panthers in the 60m hurdles.
The Panthers saw strong showings in the women's and men's mile runs. Junior Jalyn Devereaux (Carroll, Ohio) ran the fastest women's mile time on the season for ODU, finishing in 5:34.20, and junior Chad Ellis (Brook Park, Ohio) finished 19th in the men's mile out of 43 competitors, finishing in a season-best time of 4:33.02 for ODU.
In men's field events, sophomore Connor Cooley (London, Ohio) recorded the top weight throw distance of the year for the Panthers with a throw of 12.49 meters. Sophomore Clayton Seymour (Ashville, Ohio) finished with a strong showing in the shot put for the Panthers, taking 14th place out of 31 throwers with a distance of 13.12 meters.
For the women's squad, sophomore Imani Stepney (Columbus, Ohio) and freshman Shaunqueza Stevens (Dublin, Ohio) each finished with personal best times and placed in the top half of the field in the women's 60 meter dash preliminaries and in the women's 200 meter run. Stepney finished with the 19th-fastest time in the 60 meter dash at 8.09, and Stevens ran an 8.23 to place 26th. In the 200, Stepney placed 22nd out of 69 with a time of 26.67, and Stevens took 36th, finishing in 27.42.
Freshman Cassidy Long (Canal Winchester, Ohio) competed in the first women's 5,000 meter run of the season for the team, finishing in 21:38.34 to establish a personal best in the event.
Senior Shakita Kabicek (Brook Park, Ohio) led the Panthers in the women's 800, finishing in 2:32.78, the second-fastest time on the season for an ODU women's runner in the 800.
The women's squad was led in the field by freshman Emma Barth (Dayton, Ohio), who threw for a distance of 9.57 meters in the shot put and took 23rd in the weight throw out of 41 competitors with a distance of 12.62 meters.
ODU will compete in its next meet at the Findlay Classic on Friday, January 27 and Saturday, January 28 at the University of Findlay.
