Softball Wins Pair of Close Contests at Davis & Elkins

ELKINS, W. Va. – Ohio Dominican's softball team swept Davis & Elkins in a pair of close contests as game on finished with a 6-5 final and game two was 6-4 Saturday afternoon in Great Midwest Athletic Conference action.

Taylor Farmer (Mt. Blanchard, Ohio) hit a pair of home runs in game two tallying four RBI's to lead the way for the Panther offense on the day. Brooklyn Rayburn (Reynoldsburg, Ohio) also had a big game in game one as she was 1-for-3 with a three run home run and a sacrifice fly to tally four RBI's in the game.

In game one, ODU jumped on the Senators with a run in the first as Kelly Mix (Baltimore, Ohio) reached on an error that scored Landry Slider (Stow, Ohio) with two outs. However, D&E would answer with a pair of runs in the bottom of the first to take a quick lead.

That was when Rayburn struck her three run homerun that brought around Farmer and Kierah Smetzer (Ashland, Ohio) in the top of the second for the Panthers to take a 4-2 lead before D&E would score a run to come within 4-3.

In the third inning, Kelly Mix (Baltimore, Ohio) continued her hot streak with her fourth home run of the year to take a 5-3 lead and in the bottom half of the third, D&E would tie the game up at 5-5.

After a scoreless fourth, fifth and sixth innings, Rayburn struck again as she flew out to right field for a sacrifice fly that brought in Cameron Barber (Powell, Ohio).

Freshman Sydney Long (Ashland, Ohio) moved to 8-3 on the season as she allowed five runs on 12 hits with six strikeouts.

After the Senators scored in the first to take a 1-0 lead in game two, Farmer came to the plate and belted her first home run of the game to bring around Smetzer as ODU took the lead 2-1. In the third, ODU took a 3-1 lead as Farmer showed her patience drawing a bases loaded walk that brought Slider in to score.

With ODU clinging to a 3-2 lead heading to the seventh, ODU would add three insurance runs to secure the win. Barber led off the inning with a solo home run and a couple batters later, Farmer struck again for her second home run of the game making the score 5-2. Carson Hackerd (Frankfort, Indiana) reached on an error by the left fielder that brought Rayburn around making the score 6-2.

Cameron Barber earned the win in the circle as she allowed four runs on eight hits with five strikeouts.

The Panthers are riding a 13-game win streak and are 21-13 overall and 12-0 in the conference as they head to UIndy on Wednesday, April 3 with game one beginning at 2 p.m.
