COLUMBUS, Ohio — Ashland picked up two victories over Ohio Dominican's softball team on Monday at Panther Field, topping the hosts by final marks of 10-0 (6 inn.) and 4-3.
In game one, the Eagles tallied nine hits and capitalized on three Panther errors while holding Ohio Dominican to just four hits.
The Panthers (10-13) took the Eagles to the final inning in game two. Trailing 1-0 in the bottom of the fourth, sophomore Cameron Barber (Powell, Ohio) hit a shot to left center field for a two-run home run, giving Ohio Dominican a 2-1 lead.
After Ashland capitalized on Panther error to go ahead 3-2 in the top of the sixth, Barber once again answered with another RBI. With senior Liz Sutter (Mansfield, Ohio) on second base, Barber hit a bullet to the Eagle third baseman. The ball bounced off the infielder's outstretched glove, allowing Sutter to score and tie the game at 3-3.
But the Eagles scored the game winning run in the top of the seventh. With runners on second and third, Ashland's Amanda Wire bunted for a single with the runner from third ruled safe following a failed tag, giving AU a 4-3 lead. The Panthers couldn't muster the tying run in the bottom of the seventh and fell 4-3.
Barber played a masterpiece of a game, going 2-for-3 with three RBIs while also going all seven innings in the circle and allowing just one earned run.
Ohio Dominican will travel to Malone and Cedarville this weekend for the first Great Midwest Athletic Conference games of the season.
