Softball Defeats No. 9 Southern Indiana, Falls To RV Indianapolis

WESTFIELD, Ind. — Ohio Dominican's softball team earned its first victory over a top 10 team since 2014 with a 5-1 win over No. 9 Southern Indiana before falling 6-4 to RV Indianapolis on Monday at Grand Park.

The Panthers (6-6) have won five of their last eight games and with their victory over Southern Indiana, earned their first win over a ranked team since 2016 and a top 10 team since an April 6, 2014 sweep of No. 6 Wayne State.

In the 5-1 win over USI, Ohio Dominican scored five runs on six hits while limiting the Screaming Eagles to just one run on five hits, not allowing an earned run for the contest.

Junior pitcher Abby Lamping (Cleves, Ohio) went all seven innings in the circle, accruing two strikeouts while also notching an RBI at the plate. Junior Kelly Mix (Baltimore, Ohio) went 2-for-3 with three RBIs. Sophomore Landry Slider (Stow, Ohio) recorded an RBI triple. Senior Liz Sutter (Mansfield, Ohio) went 2-for-3 with a stolen base, while senior Taylor Kline (Bellville, Ohio) notched a hit and stole her 11th base of the season.

The Panthers never trailed and wasted no time getting on the board. In the bottom of the first, Kline singled to lead off the inning. A single by Sutter advanced Kline to second, and after a double-steal by both runners, Mix singled up the middle to score Sutter and Kline to put ODU in front, 2-0.

Leading 2-1 in the bottom of the third inning with one out, Sutter singled and then advanced to third in the next at bat after a throwing error. Mix notched another RBI to increase Ohio Dominican's lead to 3-1.

In the bottom of the fourth with two outs, Lamping earned a walk and then Slider tripled to drive her home, extending the Panther lead to 4-1. Lamping notched an RBI in the bottom of the sixth on a sacrifice fly to push ODU's advantage to 5-1, and then retired the side in order in the top of the seventh to earn her second win of the year, 5-1.

In game two, the Panthers fell 6-4 to RV Indianapolis. Ohio Dominican finished with four runs on nine hits, but stranded nine runners on base.

Sophomore Taylor Farmer (Mt. Blanchard, Ohio) went 2-for-3 with two RBIs and a triple, also going 4.2 innings in the circle. Sutter went 2-for-2 to record her eighth, multi-hit game of the year so far. Mix recorded a double, while Kline finished with a hit and her 12th stolen base in as many games.

Kline led off the game with a single before stealing a base, then advanced to third in the next at bat after a groundout. Farmer did the rest, tripling to left center to score Kline and give the Panthers a 1-0 lead in the first inning. Mix reached on a fielding error in the next at bat, then a fielding error in the following at bat allowed Farmer to score and push the Panther lead to 2-0 through one.

Leading 2-1 in the top of the second, Farmer singled up the middle to score Sutter and sophomore Brooklyn Rayburn (Reynoldsburg, Ohio), extending the Ohio Dominican lead to 3-1.

UIndy (10-4) used a five-run fifth inning to seize a 6-3 lead. ODU gave itself another chance in the bottom of the seventh, loading the bases with no outs. But UIndy's Lauren Honkomp entered in relief and limited the Panthers to just one run, earning the win by a final score of 6-4.

Ohio Dominican will prepare to host Tiffin this Wednesday, February 28 at Panther Field in its first home, doubleheader of the year.
