COLUMBUS, Ohio — Ohio Dominican's softball team picked up two wins over Grand Valley State in the 2017 GLIAC home openers for ODU at Panther Field on Friday.
The Panthers (15-13, 2-0 GLIAC) defeated the Lakers by a final score of 5-4 (8 inn.) in extra innings in game one and scored a 3-2 win over GVSU in the second game of the day.
A walk off single in the bottom of the eighth inning of game one by Ohio Dominican junior Taylor Kline (Bellville, Ohio) secured a 5-4 (8 inn.) win for the Panthers.
Trailing 4-2 in the bottom of the seventh with one out, senior Kelly Wallace (Oshkosh, Wisconsin) blasted a two-run home run to left field, tying the game at 4-4.
In the bottom of the eighth, freshman Landry Slider (Stow, Ohio) earned a walk to reach first to lead off the inning. Then in the next at bat, freshman Taylor Farmer (Mt. Blanchard, Ohio) singled on a bunt to advance Slider to second with no outs. Two batters later with one out, Kline delivered, singling through the left side to score Slider and earn the walk off victory for Ohio Dominican, 5-4.
Sophomore pitcher Abby Lamping (Cleves, Ohio) went the distance for the Panthers, earning her seventh win of the year.
Wallace finished 2-for-3 with three RBIs, Kline went 2-for-5 with one stolen base and Slider earned two walks for the Panthers.
In game two, ODU held Grand Valley to just two runs on six hits while using nine hits to earn a 3-2 win. Junior pitcher Bailey Miller (Cincinnati, Ohio) picked up her fourth win of the year in the contest, pitching 4.2 innings in the circle and allowing just one earned run. Slider finished a career-high 3-for-4, recording one RBI. Wallace recorded a hit for the seventh time in the last nine games, while sophomore Kelly Mix (Baltimore, Ohio) finished with one hit and RBI for ODU.
The Panthers trailed 1-0 until the top of the fourth, when a sacrifice fly by Mix scored senior Casey Murdoch (Morrow, Ohio) to tie the game at 1-1. In the next at bat, Slider singled down the left field line to score sophomore Maria Simmonds (Columbus, Ohio), giving Ohio Dominican a 2-1 lead. ODU scored in the top of the sixth on a fielder's choice to extend its advantage to 3-1 and held GVSU to just one more run for the remainder of the game, earning the win, 3-2.
Ohio Dominican continues GLIAC play at Panther Field on Saturday with a doubleheader against Ferris State beginning at 11 a.m.
