COLUMBUS, Ohio -- Ohio Dominican's softball team swatted three home runs but had to settle for a doubleheader split with GLIAC foe Tiffin Wednesday. The Panthers took game one 5-2 and held a 2-0 lead in the sixth inning of game two before falling 3-2.
With the split, the Panthers moved to 14-18 on the season and 8-4 in the GLIAC, remaining in second place in the South Division ledger. ODU's 14 wins also matched the team's win total from last season, its first year competing in NCAA Division II and the GLIAC.
Senior Caitlin Chaney (Newark, Ohio), freshman Alex Cribari (Lyndhurst, Ohio) and sophomore Danyelle Delligatta (Sidney, Ohio) all swatted home runs for ODU, and the Panthers also picked up a pair of strong efforts on the mound from freshman Rachael Stanzel (Angleton, Texas) and redshirt freshman Kendall Lust (Marion, Ohio).
In the opener, Cribari blasted a towering shot to right center in the second inning to start the scoring, and Chaney lined one over the wall in left field in the third inning to put ODU on top 2-0. Tiffin (16-15, 7-7 GLIAC) came back with a two-run homer of its own in the top of the fourth, though, to knot the game at two.
The Panthers struck back quickly in the bottom half, though. Freshman Kelsey Seeds (Westerville, Ohio) started the inning with a single and after stealing second, went to third on a wild pitch. Junior Brooke McCartney (Salem, Ohio) walked and stole second, and with two down, sophomore Caitlin Jividen (Wheeling, W. Va.) hit a roller to second base that she beat out, and with the throw winding up in the Dragon dugout, scored both Seeds and McCartney to make it 4-2.
That proved to be all the run support Stanzel needed. After the homer in the fourth, she set down 11 straight Dragon hitters between the fourth and seventh innings. ODU tacked on an insurance run in the sixth as Jividen scored on a wild pitch, and Stanzel - after allowing a two-out single - earned her ninth win of the season by inducing a ground out to short to end it.
Stanzel tossed her 13th complete game of the season, allowing just six hits and the two runs while striking out three and walking just one.
Jividen went 2-for-4 at the plate and senior Kylee Crislip (Louisville, Ohio) went 2-for-3 with a walk to lead the offense.
Both starting pitchers controlled action in game two as neither team cracked the scoring column until the sixth inning. Tiffin put a runner in scoring position against Lust in the first inning but didn't have anyone reach second again until the fifth.
ODU had better success getting runners to second and third, putting at least one into scoring position in each of the first four frames, but also could not score.
Finally, with two out in the sixth, Crislip drew a four-pitch walk, and Delligatta laced a two-out shot over the wall in left center to put the Panthers in front 2-0.
ODU's defense couldn't keep Tiffin off the board, though. An error and a soft liner lost in the sun helped the Dragons load the bases with one out, and Tiffin tied the game on an infield single and a basehit to right. Lust left the bases loaded, though, getting a groundout to second to end the inning.
McCartney singled with two out in the seventh but couldn't advance, and Tiffin came up with the win as a two-out RBI single to left center ended the contest in the bottom half.
Lust was the tough-luck loser, going 6.2 innings and holding Tiffin to two earned runs on nine hits, and she did not walk a batter. Delligatta was the lone Panther with a multi-hit effort in game two, finishing 2-for-3 at the dish.
Ohio Dominican continues GLIAC play with a road doubleheader at South Division leader Ashland at 3:30 Thursday.
