ELKINS, W.Va. — Ohio Dominican's men's soccer team fell 2-1 to Davis & Elkins on Saturday evening in a closely-contested, Great Midwest Athletic Conference Tournament quarterfinal match.
The Panthers (8-9, 7-7 G-MAC) finish the 2017 season with their highest win total since the squad earned 12 wins in 2013 before a second-round exit in the NCAA Tournament. D&E (13-2-2, 11-1-2) snapped a six-match win streak for ODU, its longest since the 2007 season and the longest win streak for a Great Midwest squad entering conference tournament play. Meanwhile, the Senators move on to the Great Midwest semifinals riding a five-match win streak.
Ohio Dominican finished with 11 shots and four shots on goal for the match. Leading the way for ODU was junior Ryan Kasprzak (Hilliard, Ohio), who notched his eighth goal of the year and 24th of his Panther career. Kasprzak scored in five of the final seven matches of the season for ODU. Junior Jonathan Barnes (Winter Haven, Florida) and freshman Jaxson Szabo (Worthington, Ohio) also recorded shots on goal for Ohio Dominican.
Davis & Elkins held a 2-0 advantage until the 63rd minute, when Kasprzak scored on an assist from freshman Foster Martin (Kings Mills, Ohio), cutting the Panther deficit to just 2-1.
Szabo recorded a shot on goal in the 88th minute for the Panthers, but D&E keeper Hedi Mehnaoui notched a save and held the Panthers scoreless over the final 27 minutes of the contest, earning the 2-1 win for the Senators.
The Panthers will look forward to the 2018 season and second year of competition in the Great Midwest.
