INDIANAPOLIS — Ohio Dominican men's soccer junior defender Phillip Kelly (Canal Winchester, Ohio) was tabbed as defensive player of the week in the Great Midwest Athletic Conference, the league announced Tuesday.
Kelly recorded two assists in a 3-2 win over No. 12 Urbana on Thursday night and recorded another assist against Ashland on Sunday.
The junior captain has started in 24 matches during his Panther career and boasts one goal and four assists all while playing at defender for ODU.
Kelly's three assists during the week came at crucial times for the Panthers. His first assist came on the first goal of the year for Ohio Dominican, beginning what turned into a breakaway goal for junior Jonathan Barnes (Winter Haven, Florida) after finding freshman Alec Holden (Upper Arlington, Ohio) with a well-placed pass up the left sideline to create the opportunity for Barnes and help the Panthers take an early 1-0 lead over Urbana.
Kelly's second assist came on a free kick from nearly 60 yards out, finding freshman Jaxson Szabo (Worthington, Ohio) for the game winning goal over the Blue Knights.
The junior recorded his third assist of the week again on a free kick, setting up Szabo with a pass in the box that led to senior Austin Blair (Cincinnati, Ohio) taking advantage of the goal scoring opportunity and notching the first goal of his Panther career, bringing ODU within striking distance of the Eagles.
Ohio Dominican men's soccer begins Great Midwest play this week with a home match against Findlay on Wednesday, September 6 before traveling to Trevecca Nazarene on Saturday, September 9.
