COLUMBUS, Ohio —The I-70 cup resides in Columbus for the year, as ODU junior Phillip Kelly (Canal Winchester, Ohio) took a free kick from 60 yards and found freshman Jaxson Szabo (Worthington, Ohio) for a header goal to earn a 3-2 victory for the Panthers over No. 12 Urbana on Thursday night at Panther Stadium.
Szabo's header found the back right corner of the net, as the freshman's first goal of his career was a game winner in dramatic fashion.
Szabo wasn't the only newcomer to score a goal for the Panthers (1-0-0, 0-0-0 G-MAC) in their first contest of the 2017 season, as junior Jonathan Barnes (Winter Haven, Florida) found the back of the net just 8:21 into the game on assists from freshman Alec Holden (Upper Arlington, Ohio) and junior Phillip Kelly (Canal Winchester, Ohio) after a breakaway for ODU led to Barnes' goal from the close right wing, giving Ohio Dominican an early 1-0 lead.
After going into halftime tied 1-1 with the Blue Knights, junior Ryan Kasprzak (Hilliard, Ohio) would put the Panthers ahead 2-1 on a penalty kick goal in the second half at the 58:13 mark, scoring the 17th goal of his career.
Urbana countered with a goal in the 74th minute, but it was Szabo and Kelly who connected for the game winning goal, earning a 3-2 victory for Ohio Dominican in its first match of the 2017 season.
ODU held a 7-4 advantage over Urbana in both shots on goal and corner kicks. Seven different Panthers finished with shots on goal for the contest.
The Panthers will host Ashland in their next match on Sunday, September 3 at 2:30 p.m. at Panther Stadium.
