Men’s Soccer Signs Five For 2017

COLUMBUS, Ohio — Ohio Dominican's men's soccer team will welcome five student-athletes to the squad for the 2017 season as part of this year's recruiting class.

Aaron Ashby (Zanesville, Ohio), Ross Baumer (Hilliard, Ohio), Alec Holden (Upper Arlington, Ohio), Foster Martin (Kings Mills, Ohio) and Jaxson Szabo (Worthington, Ohio) will be joining the program this fall for the upcoming season.

"Each of these players bring unique skills that will strengthen the program," Ohio Dominican men's soccer head coach Willy Merrick said. "We look forward to continuing their development."

Aaron Ashby | 5-10 | CM, CB | Business Administration | Arsenal S.C. | Zanesville, Ohio/Zanesville

High School: Named East District Division I Player of the Year as a senior at Zanesville…Earned Second Team All-Ohio accolades in each of his final two seasons…Named to First Team East Central Ohio League and First Team East District as a senior…Earned two All-Ohio scholar awards…Served as President of Zanesville's National Honor Society…Finished with 12 goals and 23 assists in his career as a Blue Devil…Finished with six goals and 14 assists in his senior campaign…Also played football and swam at Zanesville.

Personal: Son of Steve and Wendy Ashby…Has one sister, Jordan, who played soccer at Ohio Dominican…Picked ODU because he "loves the campus and the area. I'm familiar with the campus and I like the style of play that ODU has."

"ODU runs in this kids blood," Merrick said. "His sister played at ODU and he is following suit. Aaron brings a good soccer mind and will help strengthen the midfield."

Ross Baumer | 5-10 | F | Education | Blast F.C. | Hilliard, Ohio/Hilliard Darby

High School: Named a team captain at Hilliard Darby in his final two years as a Panther…Led Darby in scoring as a senior…Favorite high school memory was beating Davidson in the final six seconds of the contest.

Personal: Son of Julie and John Baumer…Has one sibling, Madison…Chose Ohio Dominican because of style of play and coaching staff.

"Ross has a competitive edge that we were looking for," Merrick said. "He is technically sound and will be able to help us in a few different areas."

Alec Holden | 6-1 | CB | Sport Management | Ohio Premier | Upper Arlington, Ohio/Upper Arlington

High School: Earned Second Team All-Central District and First Team Ohio Capital Conference honors as a senior at Upper Arlington…Named a senior team captain…Scored seven goals and picked up one assist in his senior campaign.

Personal: Son of Melissa and Charles Holden…Has two siblings, Ashley, who is a collegiate rower, and Jaimie...Picked Ohio Dominican for the academic opportunity and chance to play for a former coach…Enjoys golfing, snowboarding, hanging out with friends, girlfriend, and family.

"Alec is a left-footed player who has good speed for his size," Merrick said. "We are looking for him to whip in many crosses this fall."

Foster Martin | 5-8 | F/M | Business Administration | Ohio Galaxies FC | Kings Mills, Ohio/Kings

High School: First Team All-Eastern Cincinnati Conference performer in his senior, junior and sophomore seasons at Kings…Earned Academic All-Southwest District honors in each of his four years as a Knight…Served as team captain as a senior…Garnered team MVP honors as a senior and junior…Finished with 30 goals and 26 assists in his career…Favorite high school memory was "scoring an equalizing, 35-yard free kick goal with less than a minute left against our high school rival."

Personal: Son of Doug and Dana Martin…Has two siblings, Emma and Anya Martin…Chose Ohio Dominican "because of the academics, soccer program and coaches, location and opportunities at a small college."…Enjoys fishing, boating, basketball and skiing in his free time.

"Foster is a dynamic threat due to his technical ability and soccer IQ," Merrick said. "He will bring depth to the core of attackers we already have."

Jaxson Szabo | 6-3 | M | Business Administration | Classics Eagles | Worthington, Ohio/Thomas Worthington

High School: First Team All-Central District and First Team All-Ohio Capital Conference performer in his senior year at Thomas Worthington…Scored 19 goals and dished out six assists in his senior campaign…Played basketball at Thomas Worthington…Favorite high school memory was "being successful and being a leader and captain of the team" during his senior season while helping players around me become better."

Personal: Son of Jim and Julie Szabo…Has three siblings, Jake, who was a two-time First Team All-GLIAC performer in soccer at Ohio Dominican, Jessica and Jenna…Picked Ohio Dominican "to improve myself as a soccer player and student. My brother really enjoyed the school and soccer program and is a big role model for me."

"He scored over 15 goals for his high school program and we know he can do the same at the next level," Merrick said.
