COLUMBUS, Ohio — Two second half goals powered the way for Ohio Dominican's men's soccer team, which defeated Saginaw Valley 2-0 in the #BStrong Game at Panther Stadium on Friday night.
The match was dedicated to ODU senior and men's soccer team manager Brian Reese, who is currently battling Osteosarcoma. Reese was honored prior to the game with an honorary kickoff and place in the Panther starting lineup.
Ohio Dominican (5-8-0, 5-6-0 GLIAC) outshot Saginaw Valley (10-3-0, 8-3-0 GLIAC) 18-13 overall and held a slight 5-4 edge in shots on goal. The Panthers also accrued 11 corner kicks compared to six for SVSU.
The Panthers were led by seniors Shane Facemyer (Sunbury, Ohio) and Tanner Ebright (Pickerington, Ohio), who each scored goals in the second half to key the 2-0 victory. Facemyer finished with three shots and two shots on goal, with Ebright recording three shots on goal.
The match was tied 0-0 at halftime, with shots also tied 6-6 heading into the locker room. The Panther defense survived a scare in the 29th minute, as a shot by SVSU's Matt Wilson hit the right post but bounced away from the goal, preserving the 0-0 tie.
But the Ohio Dominican offense was able to breakthrough in the second half. Facemyer struck in the 75th minute after the ball was deflected by a defender, sweeping in with a through ball that connected with the bottom right corner of the net, giving the Panthers a 1-0 lead with 15:07 to play.
Then in the 89th minute, Ebright recovered after his initial shot was saved, controlling the ball and dribbling it away from the goalkeeper into the middle of the box and scoring to lift the Panthers to a 2-0 lead, which it maintained to the final whistle.
The victory puts Ohio Dominican in fifth place in the GLIAC heading into Sunday's match against Northwood.
ODU will face Northwood on Sunday, October 16 at Panther Stadium, with kickoff scheduled for 2 p.m.
