COLUMBUS, Ohio — Ohio Dominican's men's soccer team dropped a close, 2-1 decision in its home opener against No. 16 Urbana on Thursday night.
Urbana started the scoring at the 7:26 mark in the first half, when freshman Raphael Northoff scored on the first goal of his career to give the Blue Knights a 1-0 lead. Urbana lead ODU 1-0 at halftime.
With 9:35 left in the game, Urbana increased its lead after senior Thibaut Bourrier scored on a strike from the left wing on an assist from senior Lewis Dunne, pushing the lead to 2-0.
But Ohio Dominican (0-1-0, 0-0-0 GLIAC) found new life just moments later. Trailing 2-0 with 9:05 remaining in the game, senior Michael Mueller (Aurora, Illinois) scored on a header in the box after a shot by freshman Cameron Christian (Pataskala, Ohio) hit the post and deflected to Mueller, bringing the score to 2-1. Ohio Dominican could not even the score however to force overtime, falling 2-1.
The Panthers were outshot 14-8 by Urbana, with the Blue Knights also holding an 8-2 advantage in shots on goal.
Junior Robby Frye (Cincinnati, Ohio) got the starting nod at goalkeeper for the Panthers, recording three saves.
Senior Michael Mueller (Aurora, Illinois) scored his first career goal and Sophomore Ryan Kasprzak (Hilliard, Ohio) led the Panthers in shots with four. Sophomore Yugi Yamada (Tsukuba, Japan) also recorded a shot on goal for Ohio Dominican.
The Panthers will host Northern Michigan in its next contest on Sunday, September 11, with kickoff slated for 12 p.m. at Panther Stadium.
