COLUMBUS, Ohio – The Ohio Dominican men's soccer team will look to continue their early season success as they play in two tough matches this week.
The Panthers are coming off their first week of the season which saw them go 2-0-0. ODU opened the season with a road win at Urbana, defeating the Blue Knights 2-0. The Panthers followed that win up with another road victory against Bellarmine, winning 3-2 on an overtime penalty kick from senior Jakob Szabo (Worthington, OH). Szabo and junior Brent Wahle (Pataskala, OH) lead the team in goals with two each.
Sophomore Justin Bonchek (Mayfield, OH) was named conference Defensive Player of the Week with his three assists in two games. Bonchek was also part of the defense which recorded the shutout against Urbana.
This week the Black and Gold will open up their conference schedule, as well as play a tough non-conference opponent in Mercyhurst.
Lake Erie (1-0-0)
The Panthers will be on the road for their third straight match when they head to Painesville, Ohio on Friday for their first Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference match against Lake Erie. The Storm are coming off a season which saw them go 8-8-2 overall and advance to the conference semi-finals, where ODU defeated them by a score of 2-0. The two teams split during the regular season with each winning at home by a score of 2-1.
This season the Storm are 1-0 with a win over California (PA). Before hosting the Panthers, Lake Erie will have a home match against Salem International.
Senior Alfred Majer, who led the team in points during the 2013 season with 18 (eight goals and two assists), has already found the back of the net once against California. Junior Anthony Novak has also recorded a goal for the Storm.
Kick-off is scheduled for 5:00 p.m. on Friday, September 12.
ODU will have their home opener against the Mercyhurst Lakers on Sunday. The Panthers and Lakers met last season in Erie, Pennsylvania where the Black and Gold won by a score of 2-0. This will be the fourth meeting all time between the two squads with ODU leading the series with a record of 2-1-0.
The Lakers are coming off a season in which saw them finish 17-5-1 overall and make an appearance in the NCAA Division II quarterfinals where they were defeated on penalty kicks. This season, Mercyhurst was ranked nationally in the preseason poll at number six. The Lakers will have two matches before traveling to Columbus to take on the Panthers.
Sophomore Danny Deakin has had a solid start to the season recording eight points in the first two Laker games. Deakin has three goals and two assists to start the season.
Leading point scorer from the 2013 season, Fernando Martinez, is back this year and has record one goal this season.
The Panthers and Lakers are set to kick-off at Panther Stadium at 2:00 p.m. on Sunday, September 14.
