Men's Basketball Looks to Defend the G-MAC Tournament Championship Starting with Cedarville in the Quarterfinals

COLUMBUS, Ohio – Ohio Dominican's men's basketball looks to defend their G-MAC Tournament Championship this week beginning with a quarterfinal contest at Cedarville in the Callan Athletic Center with tip set for 7:45 p.m.

The Panthers are coming into the week winners of five of their last six games as they defeated Ohio Valley in the regular season finale 91-82 last Saturday.

Juniors Sam Hickey (Toledo, Ohio) and Hasan Varence (Queens, New York) each recorded double-doubles in the win at Ohio Valley as Hickey had 20 points and 10 rebounds while Varence had 14 points and grabbed 17 rebounds.

Varence is now the leader in the country in rebounds per game as he is grabbing 12.8 per game while also leading the country in defensive rebounds per game at 9.75. His 14 double-doubles this season is first in the G-MAC and 13th in the country as Varence is also averaging 16.4 points per game on 52.2% shooting.

Hickey's double-double was just the second of his career while scoring in double-figures 22 times this season with 10 of those games having at least 20 points. He leads the Panther offense as he pours in 16.8 points per game where he is also first in the conference in three point field goals made per game at 3.00.

Senior Ryan Hoyng (Celina, Ohio) leads the conference in three point field goal percentage at 48.7% where he is averaging 10.5 points per game.

In the only meeting this season, Cedarville defeated the Panthers 79-63 where ODU shot just 40.4% and 30% from behind the arc. In that game, sophomore Tahj Curry (Fort Wayne, Indiana) had 17 points to lead the offense while Matt King (Mason, Ohio) had 13 and Hoyng had 11.

A year ago, ODU went through Malone, Findlay and Hillsdale on their way to their first G-MAC Tournament championship.

The winner of this game heads to the highest remaining seed where they will play the winner of Alderson Broaddus and Findlay.

About Cedarville

The Yellow Jackets have a 17-11 record coming into the G-MAC Tournament as they are the fourth seed entering the tournament. Cedarville also comes in as winner in five of their last six games as they come into tournament action following a loss to Alderson Broaddus on Saturday.

Cedarville has four players averaging double-figures led by Connor TenHove at 15.4 points per game and Branden Maughmer at 14.2 points per game. Grant Zawadzki averages 10.9 points per game while dishing out 6.5 assists which leads the conference. Kollin Van Horn is the final Jacket who averages double-figures at 10.2 points per game.

In the previous meeting, Cedarville's balanced scoring effort came out with four players over double-figres led by TenHove and Maughmer at 14 points while Zawadski had 13 and Van Horn had 12.

In the loss to Alderson Broaddus over the weekend, TenHove led the way with 26 points while Quinton Green had 21 points off the bench.
