VIENNA, W.Va. – Juniors Sam Hickey (Toledo, Ohio) and Hasan Varence (Queens, New York) each recorded double-doubles as Ohio Dominican's men's basketball team defeated Ohio Valley in its regular season finale by a final score of 91-82 in Great Midwest Athletic Conference action Saturday afternoon in the Snyder Activity Center.
Hickey recorded his second double-double of his career as he led the Panther offense with 20 points and 10 rebounds while Varence had his league leading 14th double-double with 14 points and 17 rebounds.
Three other Panthers were in double-figures led by sophomore Tahj Curry (Fort Wayne, Indiana) who had 17 points, the most since he score 18 against Malone on January 31. Fellow sophomore Michael Scott (Hebron, Kentucky) had 13 points and six assists while senior Ben Casanova (Sylvania, Ohio) had 12 points.
With the game tied at 11-11 early in the first half, ODU would go on a 13-4 run to open up a nine point lead at 24-15 capped by a Michael Simon (Hilliard, Ohio) three with 12:12 remaining in the first half.
ODU would push that lead out to 14 at 39-25 with 3:49 remaining in the half on a Casanova layup and would take a 45-33 lead into the locker room.
The Panthers opened the second half and pushed their lead out to 15 at 65-50 on a Curry layup and would keep that lead up to 71-56 with 10:34 remaining. Ohio Valley would cut into the Panther lead as a 9-1 run for the Scots cut the Panther lead to six at 72-66 with 8:50 remaining.
With the score 82-76 in favor of Ohio Dominican with 2:10 remaining in the contest, ODU would finish the game on a 9-5 run with all nine points coming from the free throw line.
The Panthers open up the G-MAC Tournament traveling to Cedarville on Tuesday, March 12.
