Men's Basketball Leads Wire-to-Wire in Win at Alderson Broaddus

PHILIPPI, W. Va. – Hasan Varence's (Queens, New York) 21 point and 18 rebound game led the way for Ohio Dominican's men's basketball team to defeat Alderson Broaddus by a final score of 85-78 Thursday evening at the Rex Pyles Arena in a Great Midwest Athletic Conference contest.

Varence had 17 points and 10 rebounds in the second half alone.

Michael Scott (Hebron, Kentucky) had 16 points on the evening along with five assists and five rebounds while Ryan Hoyng (Celina, Ohio) matched Scott's 16 while grabbing four rebounds and having three assists. Sam Hickey (Toledo, Ohio) was the other Panther in double figures notching 14 points including four threes.

The first half saw the Panthers lead throughout the entirety of the first 20 minutes but was never able to extend the lead past six. ODU saw that six point lead at 15-9 on a Matt King (Mason, Ohio) layup.

The game would be tied at 27-27 and 30-30 before ODU finished the half on a 9-4 run capped by a Scott layup at the buzzer to send the teams to the locker room with ODU leading 39-34.

Out of the locker room, ODU would advance their lead out to eight at 44-36 on a Hickey three with 18:26 remaining.

With the score 57-48 in favor of the Panthers, AB would go on an 11-4 run to cut their deficit down to two but a pair of Hickey threes gave ODU an eight point lead back at 67-59 with 6:26 remaining.

A Hoyng three gave ODU its largest lead of 12 at 72-60 with 5:12 remaining but AB would nt let up, cutting the Panther lead to four at 79-75 with 36 seconds remaining.

Four free throws from Scott and pairs from Hoyng and Varence down the stretch sealed the Panther win.

ODU shot 50% (31-of-62) from the floor and 45% from distance (9-for-20) while holding AB to 47% shooting (30-for-64), 40% from three (13-for-32 but the difference was the Battlers shooting just 5-of-14 from the free throw line (35.7%).

ODU (14-9, 10-6) begins a three game home stand on Saturday as they host Davis & Elkins in Alumni Hall with tip set for 3 p.m.
