Men's Basketball Turns the Conference Schedule Over Hosting Malone and Walsh

GAME NOTES

COLUMBUS, Ohio – Ohio Dominican's men's basketball team gets set to turn the schedule over in the G-MAC as they host Malone and Walsh this week in Alumni Hall.

The Panthers are riding an 11-game home winning streak dating back to last year as they host Malone on Thursday with tip set for 7:30 p.m. and host Walsh on Saturday with tip set for 3 p.m.

About Ohio Dominican

The Panthers come into the week with a 12-7 overall record and an 8-4 G-MAC record after a split week with a loss at Cedarville and a win at Tiffin.

In the win at Tiffin, junior Ben Casanova (Sylvania, Ohio) set a career-high with 20 points on a perfect 8-of-8 shooting while grabbing a season-high seven rebounds. Over the last three games, Casanova has scored 12 points per game while grabbing five rebounds off the bench for the Panthers.  

Fellow junior Hasan Varence (Queens, New York) matched Casanova's 20 points and also grabbed eight rebounds in the win over Tiffin.

Earlier in the season when the Panthers played the Pioneers, ODU was led by Varence who scored 17 points with 13 rebounds while junior Sam Hickey (Toledo, Ohio) had 15 points and six boards.

Sophomore Tahj Curry (Fort Wayne, Indiana) also scored 15 points in that contest with six assists while senior Ryan Hoyng (Celina, Ohio) had 12 points and four assists.  

The Panthers went on to win that contest at Malone by a final score of 81-70.

When ODU faced off with Walsh, the Cavaliers defeated ODU by a final score of 77-69 in overtime.

Hickey led the way for the Panthers in the contest with 25 points and seven rebounds while Hoyng had 14 points and six rebounds and Curry had 12 points and six rebounds as well.

Offensively this season, the Panthers are averaging 79 points per game making 29.1 shots per contest with 16.3 of those makes being assisted.

Defensively, ODU is allowing the opponent to score 71.3 points per game on 43.4% shooting with the conference foes shooting 42.4% and 29.2% from distance.

About Malone

The Pioneers come into the week after a split week with a loss against Davis & Elkins and a win over Alderson Broaddus, both at home.

Malone is sitting at 11-8 overall and 6-6 in the conference. Away from home, the Pioneers are an even 4-4 overall and 3-3 in the conference.

The Pioneers hold the conference's leading scorer as Nate Sheppard is averaging 20.0 points per game. Bryce Butler is averaging 15.8 points per contest and Ben Evans is averaging 11.3.

As a team Malone is averaging 76.1 points per contest on 45.4% shooting but just 36.2% from behind the arc.

Defensively, the Pioneers are allowing their opponents to shoot 44.3% from the floor while giving up 71.5 points per game.

About Walsh

The Cavaliers are coming off a 2-0 week where they defeated Alderson Broaddus and Davis & Elkins.

Walsh is currently sitting at 13-7 overall and are tied with the Panthers at 8-4 in the conference.

This season the Cavaliers are just 2-5 away from home where they are averaging 66.7 points per game. For the season, Walsh is averaging 79.2 points per contest shooting 45.5% from the floor and 36.7% from three.

Offensively, Walsh is led by JT Shumate averaging 18.2 points per game while Darryl Straughter is averaging 15.6 and Sterling Christy is averaging 12.9 per contest.

Defensively this season, Walsh is allowing 67.5 points per game while their opponents shoot just 40.5%. However, on the road, Walsh is allowing teams to score 71.1 points per contest.
