COLUMBUS, Ohio – A second half surge for Ohio Dominican's men's basketball team secured a 66-58 win in a Great Midwest Athletic Conference contest against Kentucky Wesleyan Thursday evening in Alumni Hall.
The Panthers were led by junior Sam Hickey (Toledo, Ohio) who poured in 25 points with three rebounds while fellow classmate Hasan Varence (Queens, New York) secured his sixth straight double-double with 14 points and 10 rebounds.
The first half saw ODU trailing early by a score of 10-2 before a 17-5 run from ODU sparked by 11 points from Hickey gave ODU a 19-15 lead with 10:21 remaining in the half.
The black and gold would gain a five point advantage at 25-20 on a Ryan Hoyng (Celina, Ohio) three with 7:07 remaining before KWC would tie the game at 27 off the back of a 7-2 run with 3:46 remaining in the half.
The half would end on a thunderous dunk from Varence but ODU would go into the locker room trailing 34-33.
ODU would come out of the half and grab a lead at 39-36 before KWC would tie the game at 39, 41 and 44.
With the score tied at 44-44, ODU would go on a 19-5 run capped by a Hoyng three point basket to take a 63-49 lead, their largest of the game, with 7:34 remaining.
ODU would match that lead with the score at 65-51 with 2:42 left on a layup from Ben Casanova (Sylvania, Ohio) who matched his season high with nine points. KWC would finish the game on a 7-1 run to get the game within single digits at the final buzzer.
KWC shot just 36.5% from the floor and 30.8% in the second half while ODU shot 47.2% on the evening while converting on 15-of-18 shots at the rim.
ODU advances to 10-6 overall and 6-3 in the conference while Kentucky Wesleyan drops to 6-8 overall and an even 4-4 in the G-MAC.
ODU remains at home as they host Trevecca Nazarene with tip set for 3 p.m. in Alumni Hall.
