Men's Basketball Drops Close Contest at Findlay

FINDLAY, Ohio – In a game that saw 24 lead changes and 10 ties, Ohio Dominican's basketball team fell to Findlay by a final score of 89-82.

The Panthers were led by junior Hasan Varence (Queens, New York) who posted his fifth consecutive double-double with 26 points and 13 rebounds.

Senior Ryan Hoyng (Celina, Ohio) posted his third straight game in double-figures posting 17 on 7-of-12 shooting and junior Sam Hickey (Toledo, Ohio) posted 12 points.

A back-and-forth first half saw the Oilers take a one point lead into the locker room at 37-36. Findlay jumped out to a 16-10 lead at the 13:25 mark before an 8-2 Panther run knotted the game at 18-18 with 8:48 remaining in the half.

The teams traded baskets up to a 25-25 tie with 6:15 remaining in the half and would continue to trade baskets up to the halftime mark of 37-36.

The first half saw 10 lead changes along with four ties.

Out of the half, ODU would gain a 43-39 lead before a quick 6-0 Oiler run gave Findlay a two point lead at 45-43 with 17:26 remaining.

Findlay would get their slim lead up to five at 56-51 at the 13:49 mark before a 7-2 Panther run knotted the game at 58-58 with 11:46 remaining.

With ODU taking a two point lead at 67-65 on a Varence three, Findlay answered with a basket to tie the game at 67-67 and the teams continued to trade blows knotting the game at 69, 71, and 75.

With the game tied at 75 with 5:07 remaining, Findlay would go on a 6-0 run to take an 81-75 lead with 3:43 remaining but a pair of free throws from Ben Casanova (Sylvania, Ohio), a three from Hoyng and a Varence layup combined with three consecutive stops on the defensive end gave the Panthers an 82-81 edge with 38 seconds remaining.

Findlay would take the lead on a layup from Alex White with 15 seconds remaining and got a stop on the defensive end to seal the win.

The Oilers were led by White who posted 22 points and 10 rebounds while Tommy Schmock and Aaron Overhiser each had 15.

The Panthers drop to 9-5 overall and 5-2 in the conference while Findlay advances to 13-2 overall and 7-1 in the conference.

ODU remains on the road as they travel to Hillsdale with tip set for 3 p.m. Saturday, January 12 with tip set for 3 p.m.
