Men's Basketball Gets Set for Key Conference Road Match-ups

GAME NOTES 

COLUMBUS, Ohio – Ohio Dominican's men's basketball team gets set to go on the road to face Findlay and Hillsdale this week in a pair of key Great Midwest conference contests.

The matchup with Findlay is set to tip Thursday at 7:30 p.m. at the Croy Gymnasium while the contest with Hillsdale is set for 3 p.m. at the Dawn Tibbetts Potter Arena.

About Ohio Dominican

The Panthers come into the week with a 9-4 overall record and are a half game back of Findlay for the top spot sitting at 5-1.

ODU is coming off a split week where they had a close loss by a final score of 82-80 at West Virginia State before rebounding and handling Ohio Valley by a final of 104-76.

In those contests, the Panthers were led by senior Ryan Hoyng (Celina, Ohio) and juniors Sam Hickey (Toledo, Ohio) and Hasan Varence (Queens, New York).

Over the last two games, Hoyng has shot 80% from the floor (16-for-20) including 12-for-14 (85.7%) from behind the arc. The senior guard scored 44 points the last two games including a career-high 24 against Ohio Valley. Hoyng is averaging 10.7 points per game this season on 58% shooting and 48% from distance.

Over the last pair of games for Hickey, he has scored 55 points including matching his career-high with 31 against West Virginia State and followed that up with a 24-point performance against Ohio Valley. The Toledo, Ohio native shot 18-for-38 (47.4%) in the two contests and 9-of-10 from the free throw line. Hickey is leading the Panthers in scoring this season at 17.9 points per game on 46% shooting and 40% from behind the arc.

Varence has five double-doubles in his last six games and in those six games has averaged 18.8 points per game and 17 rebounds per contest. The junior forward is first in country in defensive rebounds per game at 9.9 and is second in the country in total rebounds per game at 12.6. Throughout the season the Queens, New York native is averaging 15 points and 12.6 rebounds per game and in conference is averaging 17.7 points per game and 15.3 rebounds per contest.

The Panthers are scoring 81.8 points per game on 47.4% shooting and allowing 72.8 points defensively on 43.4% shooting.

About Findlay

The No. 17 Oilers come into the week with a 12-2 record and are at the top of the conference by a half game with a 6-1 record while being a perfect 7-0 at home this season.

Findlay is coming off a pair of road wins at Davis & Elkins and at Alderson Broaddus last week.

Findlay is averaging 84.9 points per game on 48.8% shooting and are led by senior forward Alex White who is averaging 18.3 points and 9.5 rebounds per game this season.

Aaron Overhiser also averages double figures for the Oilers at 14.9 while Trey Smith is at 12.7 and Anthony Masterlasco is at 10.5 per contest.

The Oiler defense allows 73.9 points per game on 43.7% shooting by its opponents.

About Hillsdale

The Chargers come into the week with a 9-5 overall record and are part of a log jam f teams in the G-MAC with two losses as they sit at 5-2.

Hillsdale averages 68 points per game on 44% shooting led by Dylan Lowry's 14.5 points per game.

Also averaging double-figures for the Chargers is Davis Larson at 11.5 points per game and Austen Yarian averaging 10.3 points per contest.

The Hillsdale defense allows 63.8 points per game while holding their opponents to just 42.2% shooting.

Before the Panthers and Chargers meet up, Hillsdale hosts Ohio Valley on Thursday.
