COLUMBUS, Ohio – Ohio Dominican's men's basketball team returned to Great Midwest Athletic Conference action Saturday afternoon in Alumni Hall as they coasted past Ohio Valley by a final score of 104-76.
With the win, ODU advances to 9-4 overall and 5-1 in the conference to tie them at the top while Ohio Valley drops to 5-6 and 1-5 in the conference.
Senior Ryan Hoyng (Celina, Ohio) set a new career-high with 24 points on 9-of-12 shooting and 6-of-7 from distance. Junior Sam Hickey (Toledo, Ohio) matched Hoyng's 24 on 8-for-16 shooting and 4-of-9 from behind the arc.
Fellow junior Hasan Varence (Queens, New York) notched his fourth straight double-double scoring 21 points on 7-of-11 shooting while grabbing 16 rebounds.
The first half was back-and-forth as there were four ties and two lead changes.
ODU jumped out to a 7-2 lead on a Varence layup but a 11-4 OVU run put the Panthers behind 13-11 at the 15:17 mark of the half.
The game would be tied at 18-18 at the 12:48 mark before an 8-0 OVU run over the next minute and a half gave the Scots the advantage. With the score 28-20 ODU would go on a 14-6 run to knot the game back up at 34 with 7:09 remaining in the half.
OVU would then push the lead out to six at 40-34 before the Panthers made a 14-3 run to take a five point advantage on a layup from Varence. It was a lead they would not give up as they took a 54-47 lead into the half.
The Scots came out of the half on a 6-0 run to cut the ODU lead to just one but a 23-4 run pushed the Panther lead up to 20 on a Hickey layup.
The closest the Scots would get was 15 the remainder of the contest as ODU eventually pushed the lead out to 31 with a minute remaining.
The Panthers head on the road in G-MAC action next week as they take on Findlay for the top spot in the conference Thursday, January 10 with tip set for 7:30 p.m.
