INDIANAPOLIS -- Ohio Dominican's men's basketball junior forward Hasan Varence (Queens, New York) was named the U.S. Basketball Writers Association Division II men's basketball Player of the Week.
The junior forward led the Panthers to a pair of Great Midwest Athletic Conference wins over Davis & Elkins and Alderson Broaddus last week.
Varence averaged 21 points per game along with 23 rebounds per game in the two wins this week while shooting 55.5% (15-for-27) overall, 3-for-3 on three point shots, and 90% on free throws (9-for-10)
In the 91-61 win over Davis & Elkins, Varence set the ODU and G-MAC record with 25 rebounds in the contest with 17 defensive and eight offensive to go along with 23 points on 9-for-16 shooting.
The Queens, New York native followed that performance grabbing 21 more rebounds including 17 defensive rebounds and four offensive boards. Varence also scored 19 points on 6-for-11 shooting and 1-for-1 from distance along with 6-for-6 at the free throw stripe.
Over the week Varence also averaged two blocks per game.
Varence and the Panthers head into the break with an 8-3 record overall and are tied at the top of the G-MAC with a 4-1 record. They hit the hardwood after break on Wednesday, January 2 as they travel to West Virginia State with tip set for 7:30 p.m.
