ELKINS, W. VA. – Hasan Varence's (Queens, New York) career night led the Ohio Dominican's men's basketball team to a 91-61 victory over Davis & Elkins in a Great Midwest Athletic Conference matchup Thursday at the McDonnell Center.
Varence set the ODU record with 25 rebounds that was previously by John Favret with 24 in the 1967-68 season. The 25 rebounds is also the most in G-MAC history as that record was previously held by Rickenjee Bellevue from Davis & Elkins with 22 in the 2017season.
The junior forward also led the Panthers with 23 points and was matched by fellow classmate Sam Hickey (Toledo, Ohio) who also had 23 and had eight rebounds.
Senior Ryan Hoyng (Celina, Ohio) set a new career-high in points with 16 including 13 in the first half to lead all scorers through the first 20 minutes. Sophomore Matt King (Mason, Ohio) was in double-figures for the second consecutive game as he posted 12 on the evening.
The first half saw ODU run out to a 15-2 lead in the first four minutes led by eight points from Hoyng.
With the score 28-17 in favor of the Panthers, an 8-0 ODU run capped by a King three extended the lead to 19 at 36-17 with 7:44 remaining in the half.
Hickey sent the teams into the locker room with a layup which also gave ODU their largest lead of the half at 21 with the score 44-23.
The Panthers remained hot offensively and defensively opening the half on a 17-4 run to push their lead out to 34, their largest of the game, at 61-27 with 15:11 remaining.
The closest D&E would get in the second half was 25 as the Panther defense kept pressure and the offense continued to make shots.
ODU shot 44.7% from the field and 38% from distance while holding the Senators to just 39.7% from the floor and 24% from distance.
ODU comes home on Saturday, December 15 to take on Alderson Broaddus with tip set for 8 p.m. in Alumni Hall.
