INDIANAPOLIS — After averaging 15 points and 10.3 rebounds per game in the 2018 Great Midwest Athletic Conference Tournament en route to the conference championship, Ohio Dominican men's basketball sophomore forward Hasan Varence (Queens, New York) has been named G-MAC men's basketball athlete of the week, the conference Monday.
It marks the second conference athlete of the week award this year for Varence, who has been an intracule part of the Panthers' success all season long and has been key to ODU's eight-game winning streak, G-MAC championship and NCAA Championship bid. The sophomore goes into the NCAA Championship with averages of 14.1 points and 9.8 rebounds per game for the season.
In Ohio Dominican's 87-74 G-MAC quarterfinal win over Malone on Thursday, Varence finished with 18 points and 11 rebounds. On Friday, ODU upset No. 11 Findlay, 68-66 in Croy Gymnasium on a buzzer-beating layup by sophomore Michael Scott (Hebron, Kentucky). In an instant-classic of a game, Varence posted his 13th double-double of the season with 11 points and 11 rebounds. In the 71-53 G-MAC championship win over Hillsdale, Varence and senior Mike DeLeon (Powell, Ohio) dominated down low to stifle the Chargers and earn the program's first conference championship in NCAA Division II. Varence finished the game with 16 points, nine rebounds and a blocked shot.
ODU (20-10, 12-8 G-MAC) will look to continue its Cinderella run into the NCAA Championship and faces No. 3 Ferris State (32-1) in an NCAA Midwest Regional first round game in Big Rapids, Michigan on Saturday at 6 p.m.
