Men’s Basketball Wins Fifth-Straight, 80-62 Over Davis & Elkins On Senior Day

COLUMBUS, Ohio — Ohio Dominican's men's basketball team won its fifth game in a row and ninth out of its last 10 with a 80-62 victory over Davis & Elkins on Senior Day in Alumni Hall Saturday.

The Panthers (17-10, 12-8 G-MAC) unleashed a three-point barrage on the Senators, tying a season-high with 15 made three-pointers and launching a school-record 39 attempts from long range. Ohio Dominican pulled down a season-high 50 rebounds and held D&E to just 31.6 percent shooting for the game.

Leading the way for ODU was senior Ronnie Williams (Columbus, Ohio), who scored a season-high 26 points on a career-high eight three-pointers. Sophomore Sam Hickey (Toledo, Ohio) scored 14 points and hit four triples. Sophomore forward Hasan Varence (Queens, New York) tallied 12 points and 11 rebounds for his 11th double-double of the season.

Ohio Dominican never trailed and jumped out to an early 13-4 lead at the 14:53 mark of the first half. Williams hit three triples in the first five minutes to give ODU an early nine-point advantage.

Leading 22-13 with 9:06 until halftime, junior Ben Casanova (Sylvania, Ohio) hit two free throws and then assisted on a three-pointer by sophomore Ryan Hoyng (Celina, Ohio) on the next trip down the floor to increase the Panther lead to 27-13 and spark what would become a 15-2 run. At the 7:03 mark of the half, Hoyng hit another three-pointer to hit the apex of the run and give Ohio Dominican a 37-15 lead. The Panthers took a 48-30 advantage into the break.

The Senators cut the Panther lead to 56-45 with 12:07 remaining, but a 14-6 run extended ODU's advantage to 70-51 with 6:33 to go. ODU went on to take its fifth-straight win by a final score of 80-62.

ODU will compete in its first conference tournament in the program's NCAA Division II era next week. The Panthers will face Malone on Thursday night at 8:30 p.m. at the University of Findlay in a 2018 Great Midwest Athletic Conference Tournament Quarterfinal game. With a victory, Ohio Dominican would move on to face the winner of top-seeded Findlay and eighth-seeded Kentucky Wesleyan.
