COLUMBUS, Ohio — Ohio Dominican's men's basketball team won its fourth game in a row and its eighth in its last nine tries after topping Alderson Broaddus 75-67 on Thursday night in a Great Midwest Athletic Conference game in Alumni Hall.
The Panthers (16-10, 11-8 G-MAC) have won 16 games in 2017-18, marking their most successful season in a decade when the 2007-08 squad went 19-11 overall. It marks the most wins for Ohio Dominican in its NCAA Division II era after booking a trip to the 2018 Great Midwest Tournament last week.
ODU shot 11-of-24 from three-point range (45.8 percent) and recorded 16 assists on 24 made field goals. The Panthers recorded nine steals and forced 16 Alderson Broaddus turnovers.
Leading the way for Ohio Dominican was senior Adam Cytlak (Van Buren, Ohio), who scored 18 points and tied a career-high in made three-point field goals with five triples on the night. Sophomore Sam Hickey (Toledo, Ohio) scored 16 points, going 3-of-6 from behind the arc and 7-of-8 from the charity stripe. Sophomore Ryan Hoyng (Celina, Ohio) scored 11 points and went 3-of-5 from three-point range, while senior Mike DeLeon (Powell, Ohio) pitched in with 10 points and matched a career-high three steals.
Ohio Dominican led for all but 45 seconds of the game and jumped out to an early 9-2 lead. Three triples by Cytlak in the first 4:02 of the contest gave the Panthers a 9-2 advantage at the first media timeout.
Leading 12-7 at the 14:05 mark of the first half, ODU sophomore Hasan Varence (Queens, New York) hit a jump shot on an assist from Cytlak, then a dunk by Varence in transition on an assist from DeLeon put the Panthers ahead 16-7. DeLeon followed up his steal and assist on the previous play with a made jump shot in the next possession to give ODU a commanding 18-7 advantage at the 12:24 mark of the first half.
Ohio Dominican led 42-32 at halftime but Alderson Broaddus held the Panthers to just 31.8 percent shooting in the second half and took a 65-64 lead with 3:21 to go. But Ohio Dominican hit 11 free throws over the final two and a half minutes of the game. After two technical fouls were assessed to AB at the 2:18 mark with the game tied at 65, Cytlak hit three free throws to put the Panthers up 68-65. Varence made two more free throws for the personal foul that was assessed, and two more free throws by Hickey with 1:28 to go put ODU back in the driver's seat at 72-65. The Panthers went on to win their 16th game of the season by a final mark of 75-67.
Ohio Dominican will close out the regular season on Saturday at 1 p.m. with a Great Midwest game against Davis & Elkins on Senior Day in Alumni Hall.
