INDIANAPOLIS — Ohio Dominican sophomore forward Hasan Varence (Queens. New York) has been named the Great Midwest Athletic Conference Athlete of the Week after leading the Panthers in securing a berth to the conference tournament last week.
Varence averaged 17.5 points and 13 rebounds in wins over Hillsdale and Lake Erie to stretch Ohio Dominican's winning streak to three games. In ODU's 65-48 win over Hillsdale on Tuesday, February 13, Varence finished with a game-high 13 points and 13 rebounds while anchoring the paint to hold Hillsdale to just 12-of-42 shooting from inside the arc. Varence tallied game-highs of 22 points and 13 rebounds to lead the Panthers to an 81-77 (OT) victory over the Lake Erie Storm on Thursday, February 15 in a postseason-clinching win for Ohio Dominican. The sophomore forward shot a combined 12-of-25 from the field, 3-of-6 from three-point range and 8-of-10 from the free throw line in the two victories.
With just one week remaining in the regular season, Varence is averaging 14.3 points per game while ranking third in the Great Midwest in rebounds per game at 9.8 boards per contest. He's notched 10 double-doubles this season and has recorded a double-double in five of his last six games. In 51 career starts, Varence holds career averages of 13.8 points and 8.8 rebounds per game.
The Panthers are experiencing their best season since 2008-09 and the squad will be competing in the postseason for the first time since February 2010. ODU has won seven of its last eight contests and will look to finish the regular season strong this week with home games against Alderson Broaddus and Davis & Elkins.
