COLUMBUS, Ohio – A balanced, high-scoring effort for Ohio Dominican's men's basketball team led the Panthers to a 108-96 victory over West Virginia State in a non-conference game at Alumni Hall on Monday night.
The Panthers (7-5) notched 27 assists on 38 made field goals and made a season-high 21 free throws. ODU hit 11 three-pointers, marking the sixth game this season the squad has hit double-digits in made three-point field goals.
Senior point guard Shemar Waugh (Columbus, Ohio) led Ohio Dominican in scoring for the second time this season and fifth time in his career. He scored 20 points on 5-of-9 shooting from the field, connecting on a career-high 10 free throws while also recording six assists and three steals. Sophomore forward Hasan Varence (Queens, New York) recorded the ninth double-double of his career, scoring 19 points and pulling down 11 boards in 23 minutes of play. Senior guard Ronnie Williams (Columbus, Ohio) recorded 12 points and a season-high six assists. Sophomore guards Ryan Hoyng (Celina, Ohio) and Sam Hickey (Toledo, Ohio) each hit double-figures off the bench, with Hickey tallying 17 points and Hoyng adding 13 points on 5-of-10 shooting. Senior Adam Cytlak (Van Buren, Ohio) scored 11 points and dished out four assists.
A back-and-forth first half that featured 11 ties and 15 lead changes saw ODU take a 53-49 lead into the locker room. Hickey and Hoyng each scored 11 points in the opening half to spearhead the Panther offensive attack. ODU recorded 13 first-half assists on 20 made field goals.
The key run for the Panthers came early in the second half. With the game tied at 54 apiece at the 17:26 mark of the second half, Williams connected on a three-pointer with an assist from Cytlak to spark a 14-2 run for Ohio Dominican. Another three-pointer by Williams and two free throws by Waugh gave ODU a 70-56 lead with 13:44 remaining in the second half. ODU saw its lead grow to as many as 17, surpassing the century mark for the second time this season.
Ohio Dominican will be back in action next on December 30 at Malone.
