HILLSDALE, Mich. — Ohio Dominican's men's basketball team outscored Purdue Northwest 43-19 in the second half, surging to a 92-64 victory over the Pride on Tuesday night as part of the Hillsdale Lanes Thanksgiving Classic at Hillsdale College.
The Panthers (2-2, 0-0 G-MAC) have won two-straight and have outscored their last two opponents by a combined margin of 58 points.
ODU committed a season-low six turnovers and has given away possession just 15 times in its last two contests. The Panthers shot 52.9 percent from the field and shot a season-high 84.6 percent from the free throw line, going 11-of-13 from the charity stripe. A decisive edge in points in the paint was also key to victory for the Panthers, who outscored the Pride 50-26 down low. Ohio Dominican scored 20 points off 15 PNW turnovers and grabbed 41 rebounds, marking the third-straight contest that ODU has secured more than 40 total rebounds in a game.
Sophomore guard Sam Hickey (Toledo, Ohio) led Ohio Dominican in scoring off the bench with a season-high 21 points, also adding four rebounds and four assists. Senior point guard Shemar Waugh (Columbus, Ohio) scored a season-high 18 points on 7-of-9 shooting from the field. Scoring a season-high 12 points and grabbing five rebounds was senior forward Mike DeLeon (Powell, Ohio), while junior Ben Casanova (Sylvania, Ohio) added 12 points off the bench on 4-of-7 shooting for Ohio Dominican.
The Panthers scored a season-high 49 points for a half in the first 20 minutes of action and led the Pride 49-45 at the break. Hickey dropped 17 points in the first half, going 7-of-12 from the floor and hitting three shots from long range.
But it was Ohio Dominican's play in the final 14 minutes of the contest that earned the victory. Leading 58-50 with 13:44 to play, Casanova was fouled and hit two free throws from the charity stripe to give ODU a 60-50 lead and spark what would become a 24-8 run. Senior Ronnie Williams (Columbus, Ohio) connected on a layup with 6:38 to go to hit the apex of the run, giving the Panthers a commanding 82-58 lead. The Panthers held Purdue Northwest to 7-of-35 shooting from the field in the second half (20 percent), earning the victory by a final mark of 92-64.
ODU continues play in the Hillsdale Lanes Thanksgiving Classic tomorrow with a contest against Lewis at 2 p.m.
