TIFFIN, Ohio -- Junior Ronnie Williams (Columbus, Ohio) scored 24 points with nine rebounds, freshman Hasan Varence (Queens, N.Y.) added 20 points, and Ohio Dominican's men's basketball team pulled away with an 82-74 win at Tiffin Saturday in GLIAC play.
The Panthers, who led for all but 2:58 of the game, held off several Tiffin second half charges to improve to 13-9 (8-8 GLIAC).
Williams' 24 points matched a season high, and the nine boards are a new career high. Varence made 9-of-13 shots from the field for his second best scoring effort of the season and also pulled down six rebounds.
ODU answered every Tiffin rally with key baskets, as the Panthers built an 11 point lead on four different occasions throughout the second half. The Dragons closed to within 67-63 with five minutes left before a Williams fastbreak layup, and a minute later Williams knocked down a triple to keep the lead at seven at 72-65.
Tiffin cut it to 74-71 with 2:28 left, but junior Adam Cytlak (Van Buren, Ohio) found Varence inside for a turnaround bucket in the paint, and Varence scored on a putback to give the Panthers a 78-71 lead with 1:35 left.
The Dragons hit a triple on their next possession, but junior Shemar Waugh (Columbus, Ohio) knifed inside for a layup with just over a minute left, and the Panthers closed it out at the free throw line in the final minute.
ODU shot 49.3 percent (33-of-67) and hit 10 three-pointers. ODU also had a 40-37 rebounding edge, grabbing 11 offensive rebounds – all in the second half – and converting those extra possessions into 15 second chance points.
Junior Mike DeLeon (Powell, Ohio) scored 10 points with six rebounds and three steals, and Waugh finished with six points, eight assists and five rebounds. Sophomore Ben Casanova (Sylvania, Ohio) and freshman Sam Hickey (Toledo, Ohio) each scored eight points off the bench.
A 15-2 run in the first half gave the Panthers a 20-12 lead, and a triple by Varence extended the advantage to 38-26 with 3:43 to play in the half. Tiffin closed the half on an 8-2 run though to make the score 40-34 at the break.
Ohio Dominican returns home for a 7:30 p.m. contest against Findlay on Thursday in Alumni Hall.
