COLUMBUS, Ohio — Ohio Dominican's men's basketball team fell to GLIAC South foe Lake Erie by a final score of 87-76 at Alumni Hall on Monday night.
The Panthers (11-9, 6-8 GLIAC) scored 47 second half points and cut a 20-point deficit in the second half to just seven with 5:06 to go, but could not inch closer.
ODU held Lake Erie to 33.3 percent shooting from three-point range and outrebounded the Storm, 37-32. The Panthers shot 82.4 percent from the free throw line (14-of-17) and recorded a season-high six blocks in the contest.
Freshman Sam Hickey (Toledo, Ohio) scored a career-high 31 points, the most points in a game for an ODU player this season. Hickey shot 8-of-11 from three-point range, marking the third time this season Hickey has connected on eight three-pointers in a game. All marks rank second in Ohio Dominican men's basketball history for three-pointers in a game.
Collecting his fifth double-double of the season was freshman Hasan Varence (Queens, New York), who finished with 19 points and 14 rebounds. Junior Ronnie Williams (Columbus, Ohio) scored nine points, and junior Shemar Waugh (Columbus, Ohio) added eight points for Ohio Dominican.
ODU trailed by as many as 25 and cut a 20-point second half deficit to just seven, after a layup by Varence at the 9:52 mark sparked a 19-6 run for the Panthers. Hickey connected on a free throw with 5:06 to go, marking the apex of the run and cutting the deficit to just 71-64.
Ohio Dominican once again cut the Lake Erie lead to seven with 2:01 to go after a layup by Varence, 77-70, but the Panthers could not inch closer, falling 87-76.
The Panthers will look to get back in the win column when they host Ashland on Thursday in a GLIAC South tilt at Alumni Hall.
