Men’s Basketball Defeats Tiffin 87-85, Earns First GLIAC South Victory

COLUMBUS, Ohio — Ohio Dominican's men's basketball team defeated Tiffin by a final score of 87-85 on Saturday at Alumni Hall, earning its first GLIAC South win of the season and its fifth GLIAC victory overall.

With the win, ODU (10-6, 5-5 GLIAC) captured its third GLIAC victory in its last four games and overall the Panthers have won four out of their last five contests.

Ohio Dominican shot 50.9 percent from the field and connected on 21-of-28 free throws (75 percent). The Panthers held Tiffin to 40.5 percent shooting from the field and 23.8 percent shooting from three-point range. ODU held a 35-23 advantage in bench points and recorded 26 points off Tiffin turnovers.

Freshman Sam Hickey (Toledo, Ohio) recorded his third 20-point game in his last four contests and his fourth 20-point game of the season, finishing with a team-high 22 points on 4-of-9 shooting from three-point range and 6-of-6 shooting from the free throw line. Junior Ronnie Williams (Columbus, Ohio) scored 18 points and shot 8-of-10 from the free throw line, also recording four assists. Freshman Hasan Varence (Queens, New York) recorded his fourth double-double of the season, finishing with 11 points and 11 rebounds. Sophomore Ben Casanova (Sylvania, Ohio) scored 11 points off the bench for the Panthers, also collecting six rebounds.

The Panthers trailed Tiffin (8-9, 4-6 GLIAC), 26-21 at the 6:53 mark of the first half, when junior Shemar Waugh (Columbus, Ohio) connected on a jump shot to spark an 18-6 run to end the half for Ohio Dominican, cutting the deficit to 26-23. ODU would score 16 points over the next 6:53, and a three-pointer by Hickey with 18 seconds remaining in the first half hit the apex of the 18-6 run, giving the Panthers a 39-32 advantage going into the locker room.

ODU led 57-56 with 6:48 to go in the second half, when Hickey connected on three free throws after being fouled on a three-pointer, sparking an 11-2 run for the Panthers and increasing the advantage to 60-56. After a missed three-pointer by Tiffin, Casanova hit a three on the offensive end with an assist from Williams, increasing the lead to 63-56. After a made Tiffin basket, Williams hit a jumper on the offensive end, and with 5:10 to go, Hickey drained a three-pointer on an assist from Casanova, giving Ohio Dominican a 68-58 lead.

Tiffin scored 27 points over the final 5:10, but Ohio Dominican made nine free throws and outlasted the Dragons' comeback attempt, scoring the win, 87-85.

The Panthers will look to win their fifth game out of their last six contests when they travel to Findlay to take on the Oilers on Thursday at 7:30 p.m.
